Brian Daboll has officially shocked the NFL by getting the Giants off to a 2-0 start. Mike McCarthy and Cooper Rush salvaged the early season with an upset win over the Bengals.
“Just win, baby.” – Al Davis
New York Giants
The Giants haven’t made it look pretty, but they’ve clawed, scratched and fought their way to 2-0.
Though Saquon Barkley leads the NFL in rushing yards through two weeks, Daniel Jones and the offensive line have had their struggles. The Panthers were able to find the backfield most of the day, limiting Barkley to 3 yards on 5 carries in the first half. I expect Dan Quinn to take a similar approach and force Jones to beat him.
The wide receivers were once again rotated; Sterling Shepard is the clear #1 option but Richie James picked up some key third downs and continues to see targets. They will be up against a Cowboys defense that is 12th in pass defense by DVOA.
Wink Martindale will bring pressure, even if he’s down his top 2 pass rushers and loses Leonard Williams in the 3rd quarter. I predicted this defense to be a mess, due to the lack of personnel, but it has performed so far this season.
Julian Love picked up a key sack late in the fourth quarter to close the day on the Panthers offense. The Giants will expect Kayvon Thibodeaux and Azeez Ojulari to return this week to a unit that is 10th in pressure rate this season. Week 2 winning quarterback Cooper Rush will be tasked with diagnosing bizarre fronts all night.
Dallas Cowboys
Until Trey Lance’s ankle broke, no team was as unfortunate as the Dallas Cowboys heading into the season. After losing Tyron Smith to a significant injury, Dallas lost Dak Prescott early into game 1. Losing your starting LT and QB isn’t exactly a formula for success.
But give credit to Cooper Rush. Thrust into starting duty, coming off a loss, Rush acquitted himself nicely. He was able to move the offense, including a game winning FG drive to beat the Super Bowl runner ups.
Ezekiel Elliott has not looked good to start the season, but his slack was picked up by Tony Pollard. Noah Brown had an excellent game and the offense will expect back Michael Gallup for this game, even if he’s on a snap count. There are still pieces to like here, even with their inauspicious start to the year.
The real star, other than the one at midfield, is the defense. Specifically, Micah Parsons. He was nearly unblockable on Sunday afternoon, with 2 sacks, 2 TFL and 5 more QB hits to boot. He will give the Giants line nightmares on Monday night. Outside of the likely DPOY, Dallas recorded 4 more sacks and 6 TFL.
Dan Quinn’s defense is 6th by DVOA. The key difference between his defense and New York’s is that Dallas doesn’t have to blitz to be effective. The Cowboys blitz the 11th least amount and yet generate the 12th most pressure in the league. That’s a recipe that will cause Daniel Jones to have a bad day.

To the credit of the Giants, though they haven’t looked their best, they’ve been victorious twice already this year. It’s hard for me to see it continuing for a third straight week though.
I expect the Cowboys defense to be thoroughly dominant in this game against a Giants offense that just lacks firepower outside of Saquon Barkley.
The under is a good play here, as I expect both quarterbacks to be affected by pocket pressure, and also the fact that since 2017 in primetime games, the under hits 60% of the time.
No matter the final score, I think this game will be hard fought and ugly. But, in the words of Al Davis, “Just win, baby.”
