Detroit looks to rebound after losing a game in the last minute. Seattle needs to find their winning ways after dropping two in a row.
I’ve mentioned it before, but Dan Campbell is really hard to dislike. In seeing him on Hard Knocks you can see just how much he cares. The analogies that make no sense start out as eyebrow raisers and then they become endearing, oddly enough. It’s important that the Lions do start to win, or Campbell might find himself out of a job.
The Seahawks find themselves in a position not that different from Detroit. The QB situation is not entirely solved, by they’re making the best of it. Had it not been for Denver’s curious clock management in week 1, Seattle could very well be 0-3. They too need to start putting some scratch together or they’ll be in the top 10 of the NFL’s 2023 draft.
Detroit Lions
The Lions don’t have trouble putting up points and I’ve certainly given OC Ben Johnson his due on this site once before. Goff has done enough to move his offense, taking care of the ball (2 int) while having a solid year in the EPA/play department (15th), coming in ahead the likes of Herbert, Rodgers, Stafford and Murray.
The backfield does the heavy lifting in Detroit’s offense (5th rush O by DVOA) but will likely miss D’Andre Swift for the next few weeks. Jamaal Williams (20 carries, 87 yards, 2 TD) took advantage of his opportunity against one of the worst run D units in football and now gets the 21st rush D by DVOA.
Amon-Ra St. Brown has been Detroit’s leading receiver week in and week out. His consistency is up there with the top receivers in the NFL, but St. Brown will miss this contest. It’ll be up to Josh Reynolds, DJ Chark and TJ Hockenson to pick up the slack. The three combined for 12 catches, 160 yards and a score last week in Minnesota.
Seattle has allowed the third most points per defensive drive, ranking just ahead of Atlanta and Arizona.
Detroit’s defense has struggled to put their foot down, allowing 31 points per game. Detroit carries the NFL’s fourth highest blitz rate and generates pressure around 27% of snaps but only have 7 sacks on the season. CB Jeff Okudah has been a giant bright spot in the Lions’ secondary.
Seattle Seahawks
Say what you will about Geno, but advanced metrics love the season he’s had so far. The issue then for Seattle is a whole bunch of meh after that. The rushing attack only ranks 22nd by DVOA, but as Kenneth Walker gets mixed back in that may improve. Walker only received 3 carries but was promptly effective, totaling 19 yards.
Lockett and Metcalf represent the top two options in Seattle’s passing attack that has posted a top-11 mark. Detroit has surrendered 265 passing yards per game, and just lost safety Tracy Walker for the season. Seattle should look to exploit this weakness.
Defensively, the Seahawks have let up around 23 points per game and lost Jamal Adams for the year. Most alarming for the Seahawks, considering their opponent, is their next to last mark in defensive line yards. Getting blown off the line of scrimmage is generally not a formula for success against an opponent that has averaged 170 rushing yards/game.
NFL Betting Trends:
- Seattle is 7-1 SU in its last 8 games when playing Detroit
- The total has gone UNDER in 10 of Seattle’s last 14 games on the road
- Detroit is 5-0 ATS in its last 5 games at home
- The total has gone OVER in 5 of Detroit’s last 5 games

I’m going to shy away from the hook on the line and go with the over.
Detroit has scored easily this season and given up points just the same.
Seattle’s offense has some promise given their signal caller’s early season success, but the defense remains a concern for me.
All of this shapes up to a game where both offenses should score on defenses that have been quite generous.
