Miners vs. Wolverines Gameday
UTEP heads to Ann Arbor for a Week 3 matchup with No. 19 Michigan on Saturday, September 19. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 PM ET at Michigan Stadium, with Big Ten Network carrying the game.
The Miners are 1-1 after experiencing just about every possible emotion in two Saturdays. UTEP opened with a 51-0 loss at Oklahoma before returning home and hammering Texas Southern 51-10.
UTEP has gone from losing by 51 to winning by 41, because apparently normal Saturdays are unavailable.
Michigan is 2-0, although nobody in Ann Arbor should be confusing the Wolverines with an offensive juggernaut yet. They survived Western Michigan 13-12 in the opener and followed with a 17-10 win over Oklahoma.
The defense has done most of the heavy lifting, allowing only 22 points through two games. Michigan is No. 19 in the AP poll entering Week 3.

UTEP Miners vs. Michigan Wolverines Odds & Last 5
Michigan is laying roughly 34.5 to 35.5 points depending on the sportsbook, while UTEP is getting the big road number. The total is sitting around 49.5.
UTEP has already played one game in this neighborhood. The Miners went to Oklahoma as roughly 40-point underdogs and were shut out 51-0, failing to cover while the game stayed Under.
Then somebody flipped the entire script.
UTEP returned home and piled up 491 total yards in its 51-10 win over Texas Southern. The Miners scored 44 unanswered points after trailing 10-7 early in the second quarter.
Michigan has been living at the other end of the scoring spectrum. The Wolverines are 2-0 despite scoring 13 and 17 points, and both games have stayed Under the closing total.
That’s a fairly important detail when the sportsbooks are asking Michigan to win by five touchdowns.

Michigan has produced 540 total yards through two games, including 281 through the air and 259 on the ground. Those aren’t monster offensive numbers, but the Wolverines haven’t needed them because the defense has allowed only 22 points. Bryce Underwood has completed 21 of 39 passes for 281 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Michigan is 2-0 while averaging 15 points, which isn’t exactly an advertisement for recreational Over betting.
Underwood has been more dangerous as a runner than those passing numbers suggest. He rushed for 87 yards against Oklahoma, including a 38-yard touchdown, while Jordan Marshall scored the eventual game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Michigan ran 41 times for 152 yards against the Sooners.
The defense did the rest, holding Oklahoma to 289 total yards and 10 points. The Wolverines sacked John Mateer three times and intercepted him once, then protected a seven-point lead over the final eight minutes.
That’s been Michigan’s formula so far: defend, run it, avoid chaos and don’t apologize for the final score.

UTEP has scored 51 points and allowed 61 through two games, which looks perfectly ordinary until you notice all 51 points came in one game. Oklahoma shut the Miners out and held them to 86 passing yards in the opener.
The response against Texas Southern was emphatic.
UTEP generated 491 total yards, its highest scoring output since 2016, and scored 44 unanswered points after falling behind 10-7. EJ Colson completed 14 of 21 passes for 239 yards and four touchdowns while adding 49 rushing yards and another score.
Tavorus Jones rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. Raymond Moore III supplied a 79-yard touchdown run, while Kam Thomas turned two receptions into 92 yards and a score.
Colson now has 291 passing yards and four touchdowns without an interception through two games.
That’s the encouraging part.
The less enjoyable part is that UTEP’s only previous Power Four road game this season ended 51-0. Michigan hasn’t shown Oklahoma’s scoring punch yet, but the Wolverines have shown more than enough defense to make every UTEP possession feel like work.

Miners vs. Wolverines QB Matchup
Bryce Underwood remains Michigan’s unquestioned starter. He has thrown for 281 yards through two games, but his biggest contribution against Oklahoma came on the ground with 87 rushing yards and a 38-yard touchdown.
The passing game is still waiting for its breakout afternoon.
Underwood has the bigger stage, while Colson arrives after finally getting UTEP’s offense out of neutral.
Underwood completed 12 of 22 passes for 170 yards and a touchdown against Western Michigan, then went 9-of-17 for 111 yards against Oklahoma. Michigan didn’t ask him to force the issue once its defense and running game established control.
EJ Colson is firmly established as UTEP’s starter after transferring from Incarnate Word. His Michigan assignment looks considerably different from the one he enjoyed last Saturday.
Colson was held to 52 passing yards at Oklahoma before shredding Texas Southern for 239 yards and four scores. Through two starts, he is 20-of-33 for 291 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions.
That’s a tidy stat line with one enormous asterisk: the production came almost entirely against Texas Southern.
UTEP Miners vs. Michigan Wolverines bottom line: Michigan’s defense looks ready to make life miserable for UTEP, but an offense averaging 15 points makes 49.5 a much more interesting number than the giant spread beside it.

The Miners rebounded with 51 against Texas Southern, but Michigan is an entirely different defensive assignment. If UTEP struggles to reach double digits again, Michigan may have to do nearly all the scoring to threaten this number.
That’s where I want the Under. Michigan can dominate field position, lean on the run and win comfortably without turning the Big House scoreboard into a slot machine.
My CFB betting approach here isn’t complicated: a huge favorite plus a limited underdog offense can burn clock faster than it burns an Under ticket.
I don’t need UTEP to stop Michigan all afternoon. I need the Wolverines to be themselves.
