MACtion is officially back!
Do you smell that in the air? Is your skin buzzing? No, it’s not shake and bake, it’s MACtion, baby! It may be said tongue in cheek, but nowhere else do you get to see some of the things you’ll watch in a MAC game. It’s its own brand of spontaneous hilarity.
One of the best things about the MAC is that season to season — even week to week — you never know who is going to win. Toledo was the preseason favorite to take home the crown, but already they’re second in the MAC West standings. That’s why we have to dig deep, look beyond records and use our best objective judgement to find winners.
Oh, and don’t forget, November brings weeknight MACtion!
Toledo Rockets
Like I mentioned above, Toledo was the preseason favorite to bring home the crown but has only beat the cupcakes on their preseason schedule. Games against Ohio State (77-21) and San Diego State (17-14) didn’t go as planned.
QB Dequan Finn has 12 total touchdowns on the season and is Toledo’s leading rusher. The Rockets certainly miss Bryant Koback in their backfield and have been reduced to a bottom-40 rushing success rate with his replacements.
Finn has thrown 5 picks this season and Toledo lacks a standout at receiver which leads them to their lackluster passing success rate (81st)
The Rockets though have managed to score a touchdown on 35.5% of offensive drives (39th) and will need that to continue as they enter conference play. They draw a pretty average CMU defense in week 5.
Defensively, Toledo does sport a top-40 success rate and rank 47th in SP+ but haven’t controlled the line of scrimmage and are next to last in defensive line yards.
Central Michigan Chippewas
I made the call last week on the Chips to cover +28 on the road at Penn State, and it got home. CMU brings a lot of experience back on the offense from last season with Daniel Richardson at QB and RB Lew Nichols. Though Richardson threw two picks, they were able to muck it up just enough in their 33-14 loss.
CMU throws about 59% of the time, but they don’t sport a notable passing success rate (74th). Carlos Carriere had a great day against Penn State’s defense, posting 11 receptions for 111 yards and faces a less stout secondary this week.
But, back to Lew Nichols. The fourth year sophomore is not only a team captain but has led CMU to a top-40 rushing success rate. He gets a soft matchup on a Toledo d-line that has been pushed around, so we could see his biggest game of the season.
Outside of CMU’s shutout win over FCS Bucknell, they’ve surrendered 43 points per game. Toledo hasn’t allowed much havoc (43rd) so CMU will have to find another way to muck it up in week 5 to cover.

4* Free Toledo Rockets vs. Central Michigan Chippewas NCAA Betting Final Analysis:
I’ll reinforce the point that in the MAC, anyone can beat anyone on a given night.
Toledo has played two difficult opponents in the last few weeks and now draw a softer matchup against the Chips.
Central Michigan was resilient enough to cover against Penn State and even though they rank 16 spots lower than Toledo in SP+, I think they can cover again this week. Let’s go Chips!!
