The O’s finally appear to be headed in the right direction after years of misguided acquisitions and poor draft choices. They are still a few years away from challenging in what should once again be baseball’s toughest division.However, a significant improvement over 2008’s 68 wins is definitely an attainable goal.<\/p>\n
The young outfield, comprised of bonafide star right fielder Nick Markakis, the speedy Adam Jones in center, and a possible combination of Luke Scott and former can’t-miss Cubs prospect Felix Pie in left, has the potential to turn heads with both the glove and the lumber.\u00a0Newcomer Ty Wiggington adds a flexible veteran presence at multiple infield positions, while a few freshly acquired arms should slot in nicely behind staff ace Jeremy Guthrie.\u00a0The most intriguing of these is Japanese import Koji Uehara, a 6’1″ righty who amassed a 112-62 record over 10 seasons with the Yomiuri Giants. He also won two games in the 2006 World Baseball Classic and led the entire tournament with 16 strikeouts.\u00a0Uehara hasn’t impressed so far this Spring, but it’s early yet.<\/p>\n

George Sherrill, who had 31 saves but a lofty 4.73 ERA last year, still has the closer’s job but could lose it quickly to former stopper Chris Ray who is back from successful Tommy John surgery.<\/p>\n
Behind the plate should be another bright spot, where grizzled vet Gregg Zaun was signed to mentor 2009 AL ROY candidate Matt Wieters, potentially the most exciting rookie the Birds have fielded since closer Gregg Olson took the American League honors two decades ago with 27 saves.\u00a0Second baseman Brian Roberts, who recently inked a new contract, is still the most consistent presence on the roster.<\/p>\n
Make no mistake, there will be some very painful stretches for this club as the long season progresses. However, they should be a safe bet to improve on last year’s record by 6 or 7 victories.<\/p>\n
