Aggies QB Kenny Hill was masterful early in the season; A&M jumped out to a 5-0 start and Hill was firmly entrenched in the discussion for the Heisman Trophy.<\/p>\n
Three consecutive losses in October rubbed the shine off the apple. Texas A&M lost to Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Alabama, the latter being a 59-0 embarrassment.<\/p>\n
It was a valuable lesson to learn in the knife-fight that is the SEC West division.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Auburn is still cruising and keeping pace with in-state nemesis Alabama and the two upstart teams from Mississippi. The Tigers feature a deadly rushing attack (ranked ninth in the FBS) guided by QB Nick Marshall and RB Cameron Artis-Payne.<\/p>\n

That dimension holds the Tigers in good shape. It’s assisted by a defense that has improved markedly over the past couple of seasons. The Tigers went through an uncharacteristic defensive swoon around 2011-13, but the program has always recruited the athletes to be dynamic.<\/p>\n
Marshall is never going to win any “World’s Best Passer” accolades, but if it weren’t for one slip-up against an upstart MSU Bulldogs team that is catching all opponents napping, the pivot would be enjoying a flawless record late in the season.<\/p>\n
All of this is shaping up for a legendary Iron Bowl clash versus ‘Bama on Nov. 29.<\/p>\n
What does this mean in the present? The Aggies could be in tough on the road this weekend. I expect the Aggies to bring some fight to the home team, but it won’t be easy because despite Hill’s strong play early, A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin has decided to turn to freshman pivot Kyle Allen for his second consecutive game.<\/p>\n
Allen’s first start was last week, a narrow 21-16 victory against a Sun Belt opponent (collar pull) in Louisiana-Monroe.<\/p>\n
Allen was in a battle with Hill for the starting spot in the summer and the frosh is confident. But this should be a hostile environment and a huge stage for a young, unproven backup.<\/p>\n
He was a touted recruit that can surely exhibit some skills, but there won’t be much a learning curve with Auburn defenders bearing down on him in front of a national TV audience.<\/p>\n
With the three straight bad losses, Sumlin understandably figured there wasn’t much to lose now that the Aggies are out of the national conversation. I like the talent on the A&M sideline, but it don’t expect it to be rosy right away.<\/p>\n
