The Big Ten has officially expanded to 14 teams (go figure\u2026) and with the first annual College Football Playoff on the horizon, it\u2019s time to look at who the favorites are in this particular conference in 2014. <\/p>\n
For obvious reasons that we won\u2019t rehash, the Penn State Nittany Lions are excluded from consideration.<\/p>\n
Everyone else if fair game, however, although it\u2019s safe to say that a few atop the conference have better odds than the rest at this point in the process.<\/p>\n
The following is a look at which teams are the favorites to win the Big Ten entering the 2014 college football season. Plus we make some free picks.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s a 24-game stretch without dropping one contest, but that came to a halt at the end of the last season with back-to-back\u00a0losses to the then-ranked No. 10 Michigan State Wolverines and then-ranked No. 8 Clemson Tigers, respectively.<\/p>\n Although this team enters the year on a two-game drought, it has a Heisman Hopeful behind center in Braxton Miler.<\/p>\n Health is reportedly a problem half way through August, as the quarterback has suffered multiple shoulder injuries, but nothing seems to have the team worried when it comes to a long-term prognosis.<\/p>\n The only preseason ranked opponent on this group\u2019s schedule is No. 8-ranked Michigan State, leaving us to believe that another epic year is in the works for this program.<\/p>\n The Michigan State Spartans start the season as the No. 8 team in the country, but that number will fluctuate one way or the other following Week 2. In Week 2, this group plays a road contest in one of the toughest venues to win in across the nation: Autzen Stadium.<\/p>\n Facing the third-ranked Oregon Ducks will set the tone for the year, but facing No. 5 Ohio State on Nov. 8 could be the most crucial game of the season (that and potentially the final game of the year on the road against Penn State depending on how motivated the Nittany Lions are in a season where they can\u2019t make a bowl game).<\/p>\n Worse news here is that Michigan State has already lost a star offensive linemen for an undeclared amount of time, although it doesn\u2019t sound good. The Ohio State Buckeyes are going to be looked at as the favorites to win the Big Ten championship this season, but if you\u2019re looking for a dark horse (or at least a team not favored, as the Wisconsin Badgers are hardly a dark horse), look the way of the Wisconsin Badgers.<\/p>\n At this point in the process, they\u2019re the favorites to win the West Division of the Big Ten Conference.<\/p>\n Iowa will be a close second, and depending on which group shows up Nebraska could be as well, but the Badgers are a force to be reckoned with, and the Buckeyes could ultimately find that out at the end of the year.<\/p>\n Wisconsin only returns eight starters this season, but this is a group with very few flaws.<\/p>\n Look for them to be contenders late in the season, and look for them to creep up the rankings, as they start the year ranked No. 14.<\/p>\n As it turns out, that pesky shoulder injury to Braxton Miller has turned out to be more serious than first projected. The star quarterback and Heisman hopeful has been ruled out for the entire 2014 college football season. Where does this leave Ohio State? Still talented — sure. <\/p>\n But also on the outside looking in of the top-four College Football Playoffs in all likelihood.
