Getting the first win wasn’t easy, it took New York (27-23) 12 innings after an hour rain delay to start the game, to finally scratch across the winning run \u2014 an RBI single to left field by Brian Roberts that resulted in a 6-4 victory on Monday.<\/p>\n
The win was the Yankees third straight win and eighth in the past 12 games.<\/p>\n
With the loss, the Cardinals (28-23) meanwhile, dropped to 14-8 at home to begin their nine-game homestand. It was only the third defeat in 12 games for St. Louis.<\/p>\n
The extra innings seem to be becoming a habit for New York as it was the third time in six days the Yankees needed the extra frames to secure a win.<\/p>\n
They beat the Chicago Cubs in 13 innings on Wednesday of last week and then turned around and torpedoed the Chicago White in 10 over the weekend.<\/p>\n
In order to avoid another long outing, the Bronx Bombers will hope they get a solid start from David Phelps (1-1, 3.18 ERA), who is making his fifth start of the season.<\/p>\n
The right-hander went a season-long seven innings in his last outing, striking out eight and giving up just only two runs and six hits while losing to the White Sox.<\/p>\n
The Cardinals will counter with Lance Lynn (R) (5-2, 3.60) who has just one victory over his last six starts.

\nThe right-hander will look to get back to the form that saw him start the 2014 campaign with four straight wins.<\/p>\nHis last outing was a no-decision against Arizona, as he gave up two runs and seven hits in six innings.<\/p>\n
Good news for the Yankees in this one, as they expect to return first baseman Mark Teixeira to the lineup after being scratched on Monday.<\/p>\n
The Cardinals in the meantime will hope third baseman Matt Carpenter, who went 1-for-6 on Monday, which included a game-tying triple n the first, can get back some of his mojo during an eight-game hitting streak.<\/p>\n
