The MLB season is through its first month, and teams have begun to show us what they have to offer. There\u2019s a long way still to go in a season that\u2019s a marathon, not a sprint, but it\u2019s these early opinions we formulate that will decide whether this season will be a profitable one for us or not. <\/p>\n
Here are the power rankings entering the seventh week of the MLB schedule.<\/p>\n
1. Detroit Tigers<\/strong><\/p>\n The Tigers have had the luxury of feasting on a weak AL Central Division. With Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander both pitching their way into the Cy Young conversation, it\u2019s scary to think what the team can be once Miguel Cabrera turns his season around, and he\u2019s beginning to show signs that his resurgence may come sooner rather than later.<\/p>\n 2. Milwaukee Brewers<\/strong><\/p>\n The Brewers\u2019 offense has surprisingly been a bit quiet, and yet the team has excelled. Stellar play from the bullpen has been a great boon, and the team\u2019s rotation has been better than expected. Rickie Weeks and Scooter Gennett have done a good job for the team at second base, but they\u2019ll need to get Ryan Braun back into the lineup soon. The suspension looming over Carlos Gomez\u2019s head is another problem.<\/p>\n 3. Los Angeles Dodgers<\/strong><\/p>\n The Dodgers got back one standout lefty while losing another, with Clayton Kershaw returning to the hill and Hyun-jin Ryu heading to the disabled list. The team\u2019s offense is rolling along. Adrian Gonzalez is showing some of the power he flashed in San Diego, and Yasiel Puig appears to have finally showed up after a slow start to the year.<\/p>\n 4. Oakland Athletics<\/strong><\/p>\n The Athletics aren\u2019t going to fill out an All-Star roster with plenty of no-names doing the heavy lifting for the team, but Sonny Gray\u2019s will soon be a household name if he continues his hot pace. The team has gotten offense from number of different sources, and Josh Donaldson\u2019s continued All-Star-caliber play is a real positive.<\/p>\n 5. Atlanta Braves<\/strong><\/p>\n The team\u2019s starting rotation is plugging along, but it\u2019s beginning to get concerning that the offense is having so much trouble producing runs. The decision to bring in Ervin Santana very late in the free agency process is looking like a genius move given his success thus far, and Aaron Harang continues to provide quality innings.<\/p>\n 6. San Francisco Giants<\/strong><\/p>\n The injury to Brandon Belt really hurts a Giants team that was already struggling to score runs. If there\u2019s a bright spot in that respect, it\u2019s that the team\u2019s defense will get a lot better with Michael Morse patrolling first base rather than left field. Tim Hudson continue to fight off the regression that seems will inevitably hit him at some point.<\/p>\n 7. Colorado Rockies<\/strong><\/p>\n It\u2019s easy to overlook the team\u2019s rotation and bullpen when factoring in the fact that the Rockies are scoring nearly six runs per game. Justin Morneau has enjoyed a resurgence at hitter-friendly Coors Field, and Troy Tulowitzki might be the best player in baseball at the moment. Coors Field is now officially a scary place for visitors.<\/p>\n 8. St. Louis Cardinals<\/strong><\/p>\n The Cardinals continue to struggle with finding ways to score runs, something that no one would have guessed at the start of the year. The Cardinals rank in the bottom five in baseball at producing runs. Getting Allen Craig going has to be a top priority, but there are few players on the roster who can say they don\u2019t deserve to shoulder some of the blame. No Bryce Harper. No Ryan Zimmerman. Now, no Adam LaRoche. It\u2019s getting harder and harder to figure out how the Nationals can score runs, and more importantly, how they continue to win. The team\u2019s already strong starting rotation got a boost with the return of Doug Fister to an already loaded staff.<\/p>\n 10. Baltimore Orioles<\/strong><\/p>\n Getting back Chris Davis and Manny Machado this past week has the Orioles scoring runs in bunches again. Machado\u2019s gotten off to a slow start since returning, but that was to be expected. It would be plenty helpful if one of the team\u2019s starting pitchers could establish themselves, but \u201cinconsistent\u201d is a word that describes just about everyone in the group.<\/p>\n 11.
