There wasn\u2019t much of a competition for the rushing title a year ago as Adrian Peterson literally ran away with that distinction. With so many bettors expecting a highly unlikely repeat this season, there\u2019s plenty of value to be found in the other names on the board. <\/p>\n

After an explosive finish to the 2009 season, Charles appeared poised for a breakout in 2010, but head coach Todd Haley forced Charles into a timeshare with an aging Thomas Jones, limiting Charles to 230 carries. Charles still managed to put up 1,467 yards that year, averaging 6.4 yards per carry. Charles\u2019s 2011 season was wiped out by an ACL injury, but he came back strong in 2012 and racked up 1,509 rushing yards despite constant misuse by Romeo Crennel and Brian Daboll. With Andy Reid running the show in Kansas City this year, expect the shackles to come off Charles as he is expected to receive a career-high in touches. There\u2019s some concern that a lot of his touches will be in the passing game, but if he can get back to averaging better than six yards per carry that won\u2019t be a huge concern.<\/p>\n Say what you want about Mike Shanahan and his treatment of running backs, but when he\u2019s had a true workhorse he\u2019s fed that back the rock with regularity. We\u2019ve seen that with Marcus Allen, Terrell Davis, and Clinton Portis. Two of those guys are Hall of Famers. Now Shanahan has Alfred Morris, a back selected in the sixth round of the 2012 NFL Draft out of Florida Atlantic. He doesn\u2019t really fit the profile, but Morris\u2019s one-cut style fits perfectly into the team\u2019s zone-blocking scheme, and after racking up 1,613 yards as a rookie the sky is the limit for Morris in year two as a Redskin.<\/p>\n The Muscle Hamster didn\u2019t disappoint in his rookie season with the Bucs, rushing for 1,454 yards in Greg Schiano\u2019s offense. Martin\u2019s prospects look even better in his second year. Improvements to the Tampa Bay defensive secondary will mean fewer shootouts and more opportunities to pound the rock. He won\u2019t get to face Oakland this year, but Martin accumulated most of his yards with Pro Bowl guards Davin Joseph and Carl Nicks on the injured reserve. With those two big bodies making space for Martin, and no competition for touches out of the backfield, don\u2019t expect a sophomore slump from the Boise State product. [soliloquy id=”82219″]<\/p>\n The Bills selected Spiller ninth overall in the 2010 NFL Draft, yet he hasn\u2019t seen the number of touches through his first three years with the club that one would expect from such a high selection. Stuck behind Fred Jackson on the depth chart, we were given a glimpse of what Spiller can do as \u2018the guy\u2019 last season when Jackson went down, and the Clemson product did not disappoint. Expect new head coach Doug Marrone to unleash Spiller this season.<\/p>\n We all think of the Patriots as a pass-first team, yet head coach Bill Belichick put an emphasis on establishing the running game week in and week out last season, so much so that the Patriots were second in the NFL in rushing attempts. Entering this season, the team will be without each of their top-five pass-catchers from a year ago, so it wouldn\u2019t be surprising to see them lean just as hard on their ground game. The team\u2019s previous lead back, BenJarvus Green-Ellis, did his best work around the goal line, but Ridley offers more between the 20s.
