The PGA TOUR pros head to San Antonio this week for a final tune-up before the Masters next week. TPC San Antonio – AT&T Oaks Course offers narrow fairways, deep bunkers and nearly unfair rough. <\/p>\n
2013 Valero Texas Open<\/strong> Defending Champion<\/strong>: Ben Curtis ($1,116,000)<\/p>\n Remember the 16 that Kevin Na took two years ago on the par 4 ninth? A few of the holes have undergone some necessary changes so as to make the track a little more fair but make no mistake about it, the AT&T Oaks Course will provide a serious test.<\/p>\n Many of the big manes will take the weekend off to prepare for next week but Rory will play hoping to right the ship before the year\u2019s first major and Ian Poulter and Matt Kuchar will attend.<\/p>\n Let\u2019s take a look at some of the names to watch this week and what should play out in the final prep for Augusta.<\/p>\n Rory McIlroy 9\/1<\/strong><\/p>\n Rory\u2019s inclusion in this even is a surprise but there is no doubt that he does need some work on his game! He has never teed it up this event before but is playing it as a final tune-up for the Masters. Rory has been awful in the first two rounds of his last two tournaments but has shown good form on the weekend in both. Still he was outside the top 60 in both fairways and greens last week and still doesn\u2019t look like the Rory of last year.<\/p>\n Charl Schwartzel 10\/1<\/strong><\/p>\n This will be the first time he\u2019s played this event as well. He has been as consistent as there is \u2013 top 16 in his last 11 starts worldwide and is coming off a T4 in Malaysia two weeks ago. Schwartzel is a factor in every event he plays and should contend at very least this week as well.<\/p>\n Matt Kuchar 12\/1<\/strong><\/p>\n Kuchar\u2019s game seems to suit this track pretty well. He was T14 at Tampa Bay in his last start and finished T13 in his only appearance at this event. Against a somewhat watered down field, Kuchar is among the best.<\/p>\n Henrik Stenson 20\/1<\/strong><\/p>\n This is Henrik\u2019s first time playing this event but he has been terrific as of late \u2013 a second place finish at Houston followed a 8th at Bay Hill. He is in great form and may be due for a breakout this week.<\/p>\n Fredrik Jacobson 25\/1<\/strong><\/p>\n Another Swede playing very well – 5 straight Top 25\u2032s. He officially qualified for the Masters and enters having finished runner-up in 2010 and then T5 and T18 in his subsequent starts. He is coming off a 16th place finish at Doral to a tournament that he absolutely loves. Jacobson could be the man this week to gain some momentum into next week\u2019s Masters.<\/p>\n Ian Poulter 25\/1<\/strong><\/p>\n Like so many of the stars, this will be Poulter\u2019s first appearance here. He has made the cut in an incredible 33 straight tournaments and is arguably in the best form of his career. He has been melting down on Sundays lately but will look to right that ship ahead of the Masters.<\/p>\n Cameron Tringale 28\/1<\/strong><\/p>\n Is coming off a nice T16 at the Shell last week for his fourth top 25 in his last six starts. He was a GIR machine last week and was T8 in scrambling for the week. He has a terrific history at this event \u2013 three starts, three cuts made and two top 10s. Tringale has the form and the qualities to contend this week \u2013 he just needs to clean up his play on Sundays.<\/p>\n Jim Furyk 28\/1<\/strong><\/p>\n Furyk hasn\u2019t played here in nearly 20 years but need the rounds to get ready for Augusta. He hasn\u2019t missed a cut in six starts this year and has two top 15s already. He is eighth on TOUR in fairways hit, T5 in proximity to the hole and 40th in adjusted scoring this year which should help him on this track. [soliloquy id=”82219″]<\/p>\n Billy Horschel 50\/1<\/strong><\/p>\n Has never played well at this event but enters having made a TOUR best 20 straight cuts. He finished T2 last week in Houston and has all the makings of a player on the cusp of breaking out. He is in the best form of his career and has mentioned that he likes this track despite never shooting under 74 here.<\/p>\n Brendon de Jonge 50\/1<\/strong><\/p>\n Is coming off a T10 at Redstone and has four top 15s already this year in 11 starts. He has made the cut in both of his starts here with a T23 being his best result. He has been very good in all-around this year \u2013 something that is necessary on this track.<\/p>\n Charley Hoffman 50\/1<\/strong><\/p>\n Hoffman is in some good form at this tournament \u2013 seven straight cuts made with two T13s and a T2. He is coming off a 20th place finish last week. Nobody in the field has had as much success at TPC San Antonio.<\/p>\n D.A. Points 66\/1<\/strong><\/p>\n Won at Redstone thanks to a terrific all around game. If he keeps that form going he will be hard to beat this week as well!<\/p>\n Charlie Wi 80\/1<\/strong><\/p>\n Finished T17 here in 2010 and T4 here last year making him another sleeper with a terrific history on this track. He has made seven cuts this year with two top 25s although he missed the cut last week. He is a great putter which is necessary here and at 80\/1 he may be worth a sprinkle!<\/p>\n My pick this week is Fredrik Jacobson at 25\/1<\/strong>. He is a true grinder and has been good all season long. Add in a decent track record in this event and Jacobson looks like the man to beat this week.<\/p>\n The sleeper this week is Charley Hoffman at 50\/1<\/strong>.
