Football Stats Check – Week #16<\/h2>\n

Today\u2019s list of football stats and factoids for the weekend is dedicated to legendary QB Sammy Baugh, who passed away Wednesday at the age of 94. Baugh led TCU to victory at the 1936 Sugar Bowl and the 1937 Cotton Bowl, and won two NFL titles with the Redskins in 1937 and 1942 \u2013 playing both ways and punting. His No. 33 is the only uniform Washington has ever retired. Without Baugh\u2019s contributions, the NFL might not exist today. \u00a0<\/p>\n

College<\/strong><\/p>\n

Navy vs. Wake Forest: Temperatures will hover around 40 degrees at RFK on Saturday with a 10-percent chance of rain. Running will be on full display; Navy\u2019s triple-option is well known, but Wake will be starting third-string fullback Kevin Harris at tailback; he had seven carries for 36 yards and a major against Vanderbilt.<\/p>\n

Fresno State vs. Colorado State: Cornerback Damion Owens (broken finger) will reportedly miss the New Mexico Bowl. Owens snagged one of just four Fresno State interceptions on the season, a 68-yard TD return against Boise State.<\/p>\n

Memphis vs. South Florida: Tropicana Field will be converted from its usual baseball configuration to host the St. Petersburg Bowl. The clay infield will have turf sewn over the top. Except for the danger of hitting a seam, the Trop\u2019s FieldTurf is a fast surface that should play to Memphis\u2019 strength on offense.<\/p>\n

Brigham Young vs. Arizona: The Wildcats have won their last two bowl games \u2013 in 1997 (the Insight.com Bowl) and 1998 (the Holiday Bowl). BYU has been to five bowls in the interim, taking the last two Las Vegas Bowls.<\/p>\n

Troy vs. Southern Mississippi: Troy DB Jorrick Calvin, a JUCO transfer from East Central CC in Decatur, Miss., has a team-high six passes broken up this year. Calvin has taken over for the departed Leodis McKelvin, who led the team last year with eight. Troy is 8-4 SU and 7-4 ATS this season.<\/p>\n

Baltimore at Dallas: The over is 12-4-1 in Baltimore\u2019s last 17 games as the underdog. The over is also 12-5-3 in the Cowboys\u2019 last 20 after allowing fewer than 15 points in their previous contest. \"\"The total for Saturday night\u2019s game is 39.5 points.<\/p>\n

Cincinnati at Cleveland: Bengals punter Kyle Larson\u2019s longest effort of the season was 57 yards, in Week 5 against the Cowboys. That\u2019s the \u201cshortest longest\u201d punt for any of the NFL\u2019s 32 teams this year. Cleveland\u2019s Dave Zastudil has cranked out punts of at least 60 yards in three of the Browns\u2019 last five games.<\/p>\n

New Orleans at Detroit: The last time the Detroit Lions went winless throughout an entire season was 1942. They went 0-11 in a 10-team league and were outscored 263-38. This year\u2019s Lions are 0-14 (6-8 ATS) and have been outscored 444-240.<\/p>\n

Atlanta at Minnesota: Vikings safety Madieu Williams is one of only three players in NFL history to hail from West Africa. The Sierra Leone native and former Bengal came back from a quad injury in Week 9; Minnesota is 6-1 SU and 4-3 ATS since then.<\/p>\n

N.Y. Jets at Seattle: 20-17 is the most common final score in NFL history with 219 occurrences; second best is 17-14 at 177. The last 20-17 game was in Week 11 when Washington beat the Seahawks in Seattle. Sunday\u2019s total is 44 points.<\/p>\n
