The Oregon Ducks (3-2 SU, 2-2 ATS) and Texas Longhorns (3-1 SU, 2-1 ATS) went down to defeat in very different ways yesterday, but they are nonetheless both in the third-place game in the Maui Invitational, and they will get things underway at 4:30 PM ET at the Lahaina Civic Center.<\/p>\n

Oregon was out of Tuesday night’s game practically before it even got started. North Carolina had the Ducks blown out 51-22 at halftime, and that was perhaps the kind of outcome that could be expected, since Ernie Kent likes to play things very up-tempo. \"\"<\/a>Of course, you can’t do that kind of thing with a team as deep, talented, experienced and athletic as North Carolina is, particularly if they depend on the same style. Oregon finished the opening 20 minutes just 21% from the field (8-for-38) and never could get out of its own way.<\/p>\n

These games, more than anything else, are learning experiences for the Ducks. Aside from Tajuan Porter, Kent did not get a lot of scoring coming back this season, and he put six different freshmen into the North Carolina game. One of those players, Michael Dunigan, was the UO’s prize catch, and finished with 18 points. Dunigan, a 6’10” center, has averaged 15 points and eight rebounds thus far.<\/p>\n

In the early going, Texas has committed more turnovers than it has assists (14.5-to-12.5 per game). Maybe that’s not the most surprising thing in the world, since D.J, Augustin has moved on to the NBA. A.J. Abrams applied some heroics in last night’s loss to Notre Dame, as he was nearly able to bring the Longhorns back from an eight-point deficit very late in the contest. But he shot just eight for 27, telling us a couple of things – that he will not hesitate to hoist them up at every opportunity, and that he is not exhibiting much of a shot selection.<\/p>\n

Oregon is very reliant in three-point shots (40 in last four games) and will continue to be for the rest of the year. But Texas is a team they should be able to run with a little better. The Longhorns did not defend the perimeter very well against Notre Dame, allowing 46% from beyond the arc. There is not enough ball movement, and if Dunigan is as good as he’s looked so far, he gives the Ducks a big guy to compete with Connor Atchley and Damion James up front.<\/p>\n

Oregon’s ability to shoot from long range should offer an opportunity for them to come in through the back door. And we will grab points with the Ducks, the ten-point underdog in the BetUS NCAA college basketball odds.<\/p>\n
