Most of the favorites won, though many of them didn’t cover the spreads. Let’s review a week when it seems order was restored to the football universe.

Falcons 31, Panthers 17

This victory erased any doubt that Atlanta had returned to its traditional run-first offensive scheme. For some reason, we all talked them up as a new aerial juggernaut during the preseason. They did seem to bill themselves that way but it’s clear that they still prefer to bludgeon opponents with Michael Turner. The Falcons are a rare team to make Cam Newton look ordinary this season.

Bengals 27, Colts 17

The Bengals are quietly playing .667 football but, for the second straight week, got a puff opponent. Next up after their bye is Seattle, so we could be looking at a 5-2 team here.

49ers 25, Lions 19

San Francisco easily made the biggest statement of the week – so big that Lions head coach Jim Schwartz flipped his lid after Jim Harbaugh shook his hand too hard. Even with Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley, Detroit looked vulnerable against the run. The Niners look like they’ll win the NFC West with their eyes closed.

Packers 24, Rams 3

You’d think this was rock bottom for St. Louis, but no. The Rams lost Sam Bradford to a high-ankle sprain and get Dallas and New Orleans next on the sked. At least they’re looking at a very high draft pick next spring.

Giants 27, Bills 24

This was a reality-check game for the 4-2 bills. Ryan Fitzpatrick’s two interceptions reminded us that he still isn’t a top-tier quarterback; Ahmad Bradshaw’s 104-yard, three-touchdown effort reminded us that Buffalo’s run defense still isn’t playoff-caliber.

Eagles 20, Redskins 13

Interesting. I expect an Eagles win but I expect fireworks and a high score. For once, Philly’s defense stepped up and did the heavy lifting. I suppose that isn’t a huge surprise since Bad Rex Grossman (four INTs) was a perfect matchup for Philly’s ballhawk secondary.

Steelers 17, Jaguars 13

The Jags lost again but the four-point margin – and the zero points scored by Pittsburgh in the second half of a home game – remind us that Jacksonville’s defense is for real.

Raiders 24, Browns 17

I hope for Raider fans that Oakland makes an aggressive move to fix its quarterbacking situation after losing Jason Campbell for the season, as the team is 4-2 and very much in the hunt for a playoff berth. If they can somehow pry Carson Palmer from the Bengals, they may wind up better off than they were with Campbell.

BREAKING NEWS: The Raiders just acquired Palmer as I typed this. For TWO first-round picks?!! I think Al Davis may still be alive (too soon?). [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Ravens 29, Texans 14

The score implies that Baltimore pummelled Houston but this was really just the Billy Cundiff show. He nailed five field-goals and those 15 points were the exact victory margin. Baltimore looks good and remains solidly under the radar overall. Still waiting for Joe Flacco to match his Week-1 effort, though.

Buccaneers 26, Saints 20

To me, Tampa’s victory was Week 6’s only true surprise. I expected a bounce-back after San Francisco embarrassed the Bucs in week 5 but I thought that only mean that Tampa would compete, not win. Josh Freeman’s 303 yards and two scores against the Saints indirectly showed us just how good San Francisco’s defense is.

Patriots 20, Cowboys 16

It was sad watching Tony Romo’s face on the sideline as Tom Brady calmly marched New England downfield on a game-winning drive in the final minutes. It was Romo he knew he had no chance to take Dallas back to the endzone once it got the ball back. If he thought that, he was right.

Bears 39, Vikings 10

For all the talk of a Vikings quarterback controversy, for all the talk that Minnesota must decide whether or not to punt its season and start Christian Ponder – didn’t Ponder just look better than Donovan McNabb anyway? I suppose McNabb’s effort on Sunday was tidy but Ponder just looked more athletic and dangerous to me. I think starting Ponder is the right decision for both winning now and the future.

Jets 24, Dolphins 6

The Jets got it done on defense – Darrelle Revis’ interception-return TD alone was enough to beat Miami – but their offense continues to scuffle. Are the Jets and their fans finally realizing what the rest of us already knew? Mark Sanchez just isn’t all that good.

Welcome to the CappersPicks.com NFL football weekly predictions pages!
