When Arizona State takes on Utah this weekend, the Pac-12 South Division championship will be on the minds of fans, players and coaches. USC is ineligible for the title due to a two-year postseason ban. <\/p>\n
Time\/Date: 3:30 p.m. Eastern, October 8<\/strong> UCLA is struggling massively on offense and shows little indication that it\u2019s about to rise to the top of the division. Arizona just got drubbed by Stanford and Oregon and then lost to USC, knocking the Wildcats out of the race. Colorado is a non-factor after losing to Washington State. Arizona State sits atop the division and can take complete control of the South with a road win in Salt Lake City. Utah can stay in the hunt if it can pull out a victory against ASU.<\/p>\n The Arizona State Sun Devils\u2019 offense is led by towering quarterback Brock Osweiler, who has completed 68 percent of his passes for an average of 270 passing yards per game. Arizona State\u2019s two worst offensive performances, it should be noted,\u00a0flowed from Osweiler\u2019s mistakes. The tall signal caller\u00a0threw two interceptions in\u00a0a loss to Illinois\u00a0on Sept. 24\u00a0and three last weekend against Oregon State. The defense of the Utah Utes gives up only 105 yards per game on the ground, so it would not be surprising if\u00a0Osweiler throws the ball a lot\u00a0in this game. That could be a source of pleasure for Arizona State, but it could also be a source of trouble. One doesn’t know which version of Osweiler is going to show up this Saturday in Salt Lake City. [soliloquy id=”82219″] <\/p>\n On the other side of the ball, Utah is looking for a spark from a new field general. Jon Hays takes over for the injured Jordan Wynn in his first\u00a0Football Bowl Subdivision\u00a0start at quarterback. In backup duties last week, Hays was 10 of 16 for 156 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Hays is an unheralded junior-college transfer who ended up at Utah after\u00a0his previous school,\u00a0Nebraska-Omaha, dropped its football program. Hays will look to running back John White IV, another junior college transfer, to provide a balanced offense. White has proven to be a\u00a0productive back, averaging just over 100 rushing yards per game. That, of course, is easier said than done when going up against Vontaze Burfict, Colin Parker, and the rest\u00a0of the Sun Devils’ defense. Arizona State gives up only 119 rushing yards per game, and has allowed only 21 points per game on the season.
