Despite flashing bolts of competence and even talent during his lengthy collegiate career, Garcia\u2019s time as Carolina\u2019s signal-caller has been marred by disciplinary sanctions and inconsistency. The Gamecocks faithful are lucky that Garcia has RB Marcus Lattimore and WR Alshon Jeffery to work with. Those two are simply two of the best weapons in the conference; collectively they are a key reason why SC is near the top of the pile in the division. The latest news in the Garcia-Spurrier saga has \u201cThe Ole Ball Coach\u201d going public in saying he has benched Garcia in favor of sophomore Connor Shaw. Shaw will start against Kentucky.<\/p>\n That offensive duo of Lattimore and Jeffery will likely be too much to deal with for the Wildcats. Kentucky has looked miserable lately, with the latest setback coming last week when the \u2019Cats got crushed by LSU in Baton Rouge, 35-7. Kentucky has dropped its last three games, which have come against an in-state rival (Louisville) and two conference foes (Florida and LSU). The Louisville game was a heartbreaker (24-17), which seemed to take the wind out of Kentucky\u2019s sails, as it has since been rolled by the Gators and the Tigers. UK\u2019s passing game has been pretty robust \u2013 it ranks 23rd<\/sup> in the nation and QB Morgan Newton has nearly 650 pass yards \u2013 but there hasn\u2019t been much else to get excited about.[soliloquy id=”82219″]<\/p>\n Wildcats head coach Joker Phillips has to get his players to dig deep and find something against a Gamecocks squad that hasn\u2019t looked invincible by any means. Carolina came up short last week versus a cut-down Auburn squad; it also narrowly escaped Georgia and the Naval Academy, with the only other SEC foe on the schedule to this point being Vanderbilt. South Carolina isn\u2019t ripe for the picking (especially at the hands of a team in shambles like UK) but it has also looked pockmarked in 2011. A cohesive performance out of the visiting Wildcats could at least result in an entertaining match-up.<\/p>\n Simply put, when the Gamecocks get decent quarterback play, they are really hard to beat. Spurrier\u2019s team can afford to be run-oriented with the workhorse Lattimore in the backfield, so when Garcia or Shaw is throwing the ball decently and presenting another look with their mobility, it is truly difficult to contain SC. The Carolina defense has enough players to force turnovers and make dynamic plays. True, it hasn\u2019t appeared like the Gamecocks have the horses to keep up to some of the SEC West competition (LSU and Alabama just to get started) but they are an imposing East division team, especially with Florida hobbled with the injury of starting QB John Brantley.<\/p>\n A better team could potentially make hay against South Carolina, but Kentucky has just looked nondescript since the disappointment of the Louisville game, so it is safe to expect that Carolina should handle Kentucky without many problems.
