Mike Munchak takes over at head coach and is looking to rebuild the once-proud franchise.

Fisher wasn’t the only person shown the door in the offseason. The Titans jettisoned supposed franchise saviour Vince Young, who has since signed on with the Eagles.

A look at the numbers:

Last season – 6-10
Projection this season – 4-12
Titans Super Bowl XLVI Odds – +6000
Titans 2011-12 AFC Odds – +3000
2011 Titans AFC South Lines – +900

Young will be replaced with rookie Jake Locker under center—though perhaps not this year. Locker was a first-round selection, though he may not necessarily get any starts in 2011. Early word out of training camp is that he’s improved daily but, for now, veteran Matt Hasselbeck will be the guy.

Hasselbeck is certainly showing his age, but he’ll at least make an excellent mentor for Locker.

Regardless, the offense will continue to revolve around Chris Johnson. The explosive runner had a “down” season last year, following up his 2006-yard campaign in 2009 with 1364 yards and 11 touchdowns. That’s incredibly impressive, especially since defenses were solely focussed on stopping Johnson.

He’ll have an even harder time this season.

Even with the offense being a one-horse attack, though, the Titans managed 22.2 points per game—17th in the NFL. That’s not bad, but it can only improve if the passing game does. Any sort of improvement will be highly contingent on Kenny Britt. Britt emerged as one of the NFL’s best deep threats last season, racking up 42 catches for 775 yards and nine touchdowns in just 12 games. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

He’s been dealing with some legal issues in the offseason, though, so he needs to clean his act up if he’s going to make an impact in 2011.

The defense is a mess. Tennessee ranked 26th in yards allowed last year, though it was a little more respectable in points allowed (15th in the league).

The pass defense was the Achilles’ heel, as the Titans ranked 29th in the NFL. The secondary is incredibly limited. Cornerback Cortland Finnigan is probably the best of the bunch, but he often takes more off the table than he brings with his dirty plays. He’s a nice, physical presence in the secondary, though.

On the other side of the field, Alterraun Verner and Jason McCourty are battling for a starting gig. Neither is expected to make a tremendous impact.

The secondary could be under even more pressure this season thanks to a scaled-back pass rush. Tennessee notched 40 sacks a year ago, but it has lost its best rusher. Jason Babin (13 sacks) fled to Philadelphia via free agency, and there are no clear replacements to make up that lost production.

HOW IT STANDS NOW:

The Titans signalled they’re in rebuilding mode by firing Fisher and drafting a rookie quarterback.

They’ll likely hold off on Locker as long as they can, but he’ll wind up starting at least a few games this year. That’s bad news, as many observers felt Tennessee reached for the quarterback in the first place.

Look for Chris Johnson to have another strong season, but the Titans will struggle without a quality quarterback and too many holes on defense.

Season Win total Prediction: 4-12

Stick with Cappers Picks NFL articles all season long folks!
