I know that we have heard it all before but this season there may just be some teeth in the sentiment.

**Ready To Bet On NFL Season Win Total Odds? We will have them posted soon!

A look at the numbers:

Last season – 6-10 SU, 12-4 ATS
Projection this season – 9-7 (2nd in NFC North)
Lions Super Bowl XLVI Odds: +3000
Lions 2011/12 NFC Odds – +8000
2011 Lions NFC North Lines – +450

The Lions have reversed the trend of terrible draft picks despite high draft positions and they have built themselves quite a foundation on both sides of the ball.

Detroit is on a tremendous path, one that could have them threatening a .500 season in 2011-2012. The wait is over Lions fans – I hope that it was worth it!

The Lions’ gigantic step forward has been stalled somewhat by Matthew Stafford’s inability to stay healthy. Unfortunately, Stafford already has a history and will be a concern until he proves otherwise. What stands out about this team however is the fact that they were still competitive when backups Shaun Hill and Drew Stanton were lined up under center.

Look, Calvin Johnson is an absolute Stud and is able to make anyone look good, Nate Burleson is a terrific second option, Titus Young is an exciting Rookie and Brandon Pettigrew has some of the most upside when it comes to Tight End prospects. Detroit’s passing game, on paper is a force.

The trick is to become equally impressive on the field.

Detroit has struggled at the Running Back position since Barry Sanders. Injury and failure to live up to expectation has plagued this team for decades. Just as Kevin Smith’s underwhelming injury plagued career was coming to an unmerciful end in Detroit, the heir apparent, Jahvid Best experienced similar injury woes. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The Lions backfield must stay healthy for 16 games or risk another bottom third finish in rushing statistics in 2011. Detroit spent one of their draft choices addressing a huge need – Mikel Leshoure was brought in as a compliment to Jahvid Best and to convert short yardage situations – something that the Lions were absolutely dreadful at last season.

If Best can remain healthy and if Leshoure can bulldog his way for a few yards here and there, expect the Lions to improve immensely and to possibly finish in the Top half of NFL rushing for the first time in an eternity.

Defense? You wanna talk defense? Detroit has suddenly become one of the most feared units in the NFL – in just a few short years. Ndamukong Suh is the perfect centerpiece, Nick Fairley is a terrific addition and Linebacker Stephen Tulloch may have been the best under-the-radar signing in the NFL this season.

There may be a slight lack of Secondary depth on this team but look what Minnesota’s defense of a few years ago was able to accomplish with a tremendous Line and great Linebackers. Expect this unit to be top notch statistically – a potential fantasy sleeper?

Detroit Lions NFC North Prediction

Everyone is expecting this team to take a huge leap this season and I am no exception.

The team is simply loaded on both sides of the ball. While not quite a playoff team just yet, I am expecting a 9-7 season for the Lions – good for second place in the NFC North.

Health is huge for Detroit but I have faith that injuries will not be a huge factor in 2011-2012.

Stick with Cappers Picks NFL articles all season long folks!
