After one of the roughest seasons in school history, the San Jose State Spartans are coming into 2011 with high expectations and seem ready to turn the tide of their losing ways. <\/p>\n
2011 WAC | San Jose State Spartans Football Preview The best thing that the 2011 San Jose State football team can do at the moment is to forget about last season, and focus on the schedule ahead of them.<\/p>\n In 2010, the Spartans faced five top-25 opponents en route to a miserable one-win season. <\/p>\n The team is five years removed from their last bowl game, a 20-12 victory over New Mexico, and is trying to turn it around and get back to postseason play.<\/p>\n Second year coach Mike MacIntyre will be heading the process, but can no longer use the rebuilding excuse as that ship has sailed.<\/p>\n MacIntyre will have an experienced team on the field in 2011, and with that said, let\u2019s take a look at the offense and defense of the Spartans and how they will look in 2011, and whether or not they are worth a risk.<\/p>\n One major loss for the team is four-year starting quarterback Jordan La Secla. Secla was the only constant for the 1-12 team in 2010, passing for over 2,800 yards and 16 touchdowns; but also through 16 interceptions.<\/p>\n Taking over for Secla will most likely be junior Matt Faulkner. Faulkner is hard to figure out, and his stats during his very limited playing time are pedestrian at best, but this year he should be able to get into a groove that he was never allowed last year when he was backing up Secla.<\/p>\n Faulkner was a highly touted quarterback coming out of high school, and if all he does is live up to his expectations, this team could be in a great position at the end of the season.<\/p>\n The team\u2019s running game was atrocious a year ago, and no one running back stands out among the pack. The offensive line will retain all five starters, so that should fair well for the running game as well as providing sufficient protection for Faulkner to set up shop in his office.<\/p>\n However, can the same five players get the push needed for a successful running game? That is something that was rarely seen in 2010.<\/p>\n If not, sophomore Noel Grigsby, who, in his freshman season, caught 56 passes for 822 yards and four touchdowns will lead the receiving corps to help with a more balanced attack.<\/p>\n Other than Grigsby, the team is very thin having lost Jalal Beauchman to graduation.<\/p>\n The Spartans\u2019 defense gave up nearly 35 points per game in 2010, and things don\u2019t seem likely to change in 2011.<\/p>\n In 2010, the team was led by a freshman. That leader was, and is, linebacker Keith Smith. [soliloquy id=”82219″]<\/p>\n Smith led the team with 116 tackles and four sacks in 2010, a season in which he shocked everyone by his dominant play from the onset of his college career.<\/p>\n Smith\u2019s potential is sky high for this season and beyond, and will be a staple for San Jose State for the next three years.<\/p>\n If the team is to improve their defensive play, Smith will have to do a lot more in terms of leadership. But have no doubt, he will rally his team and the defense is sure to improve in 2011.<\/p>\n This team has a lot of players that can make a huge impact, but the roster in its entirety is fairly weak. The offense will struggle to put up points with their new quarterback and underachieving running game.
