MLB news: Judge declares Roger Clemens trial a mistrial<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Roger Clemens perjury trial came to a close on Thursday after U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton declared a mistrial. <\/p>\n

Walton had elected to take a recess after video evidence of Laura Pettitte in a 2008 Congressional hearing was shown to the jury.

Walton became upset at assistant U.S. attorney Steve Durham, because he had previously issued an order to bar that information at it could bolster the credibility of Andy Pettitte\u2019s testimony to follow. <\/p>\n

Clemens\u2019 attorney, Rusty Hardin, demanded a mistrial. The prosecutors suggested that jurors simply disregard the evidence.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have expended a lot of government money to get to this point; government counsel should have been more cautious,\u201d Walton said. \u201cI don\u2019t see how I un-ring the bell.\u201d<\/p>\n

Walton further explained his decision while leaned back in his chair, emotionless:<\/p>\n

\u201cSadly I have reached a conclusion that to permit this case to go forward, with the government doing what they did, to go back and look at its evidence and make sure the evidence it would present to this jury did not violate a clear ruling that this court had made…I will declare a mistrial.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
