NFL news: owners still want right of first refusal<\/strong><\/p>\n

First off Happy Canada Day to our Canadian readers… <\/p>\n

As the NFL lockout negotiations continue, it\u2019s clear that the NFL owners want to retain their right of first refusal on the contracts of players entering their fifth and sixth seasons. <\/p>\n

They would want the union to allow each NFL team to use that right up to three times this offseason.

Doing so means the owners could make a fifth or sixth-year player a restricted free agent. That way, they would at least have the chance to match any offer he received from another team.<\/p>\n

The labor negotiations in Minneapolis between representatives of NFL owners and players moved away from accord and turned into finger-pointing Friday. Oh-Oh.<\/p>\n

Today is the last day of a 4-day bargaining session. It is believed an agreement has to be reached by mid-July in order for the NFL not to cancel any preseason games. <\/p>\n

The first exhibition game is Aug. 7.<\/p>\n

Talib to go on trial in March 2012<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Aqib Talib\u2019s felony assault trial is set for March of 2012. He was indicted in May on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly pistol-whipping and shooting at his sister\u2019s boyfriend. <\/p>\n

In theory, the trial date ups his chances of playing the whole 2011 season, but will he have a team? [soliloquy id=”82219″]<\/p>\n

The Buccaneers may release him for his poor conduct, which also includes regular fights with opposing players and teammates.<\/p>\n
