Brian Gay finished 14<sup>th<\/sup> at the Bryon Nelson, five shots off the pace. Is it time to take a risk this week? We\u2019ll see if any sleeper stands out.<\/p>\n<p>But it can\u2019t be a total unknown sleeper at the Memorial this week. No rookie has ever won Jack Nicklaus\u2019 tournament, hosted at Muirfield Village. Stellar putting and some decent distance off the tee are criteria that work well at this event.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE ELITE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Luke Donald <\/strong><br \/>\nMemorial odds: +715<\/p>\n<p>The world\u2019s new No. 1 has really earned the honor thanks to 15 top-10 finishes in his last 17 starts worldwide. He leads the Tour in scoring average and he\u2019s a top-10 putter but his lack of driving distance might hold him back just a bit this week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Phil Mickelson<\/strong><br \/>\nMemorial odds: +1215<\/p>\n<p>Lefty was fifth at the Memorial last year and has cracked the top 10 three times overall. His peripherals have improved of late. He\u2019s quietly 16<sup>th<\/sup> on Tour in driving, third in birdie average, 48<sup>th<\/sup> in sand saves and, at 62<sup>nd<\/sup>, his putting isn\u2019t disastrous. If he can get it going on the greens, he can contend.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE CONTENDERS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Matt Kuchar<\/strong><br \/>\nMemorial odds: +1850<\/p>\n<p>Statistically, Kuchar, a.k.a. Mr. Consistency, looks as strong as anyone this week. He\u2019s above average in every skill needed to succeed this week, including driving, greens in regulation and putting. He also has three straight top-10 finishes at the Memorial. Kuchar is a rock-solid play. What else is new?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nick Watney<\/strong><br \/>\nMemorial odds: +1850<\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t fault anyone for picking Donald, Kuchar or Nick Watney every week. These guys have great all-around games and seem to post top-10s in their sleep. Is Watney due to break through this week? I would say not until he fixes his weekend woes. His last nine Saturday\/Sunday rounds are in the 70s.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SOLID PICKS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hunter Mahan<\/strong><br \/>\nMemorial odds: +2050<\/p>\n<p>Mahan is heating up, with five top-10 finishes in his last eight starts. He\u2019s 11<sup>th<\/sup> on Tour in total driving and seventh in greens, so he should set himself up well for birdies. Like Mickelson, he\u2019ll contend if he gets his putter going.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Steve Stricker<\/strong><br \/>\nMemorial odds: +2550<\/p>\n<p>I have a bit of a hunch on Stricker. His putter and accuracy set him up well for Muirfield Village. The key for him will be overcoming his lack of length off the tee. He\u2019ll bomb it all day long but his putting ranks among the very worst on Tour. I think it will hold him back this week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE SLEEPER<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>J.B. Holmes<\/strong><br \/>\nMemorial odds: +3550<\/p>\n<p>If you want to pick the bomber, J.B. Holmes is a more educated choice than Watson this week. Holmes actually leads the Tour in driving distance, he\u2019s a respectable 39<sup>th<\/sup> in greens hit and 50<sup>th<\/sup> in scrambling, and his putting isn\u2019t a total liability. He\u2019s an interesting sleeper.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE PICK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve made many \u201cstudied\u201d choices in recent weeks and the results have been good but not great. For the Memorial, I think Matt Kuchar is the \u201cstudied\u201d pick. This week, I feel like playing a hunch.
