Boston Red Sox (17-20)<\/strong>
\nClay Buchholz (3-3, 4.19)<\/p>\n

Every time the maddening Boston Red Sox take a step forward, they take a step backward. They followed up a three-game losing streak last week by beating the Twins three straight times. Then, the Toronto Blue Jays took them down twice in a row on Tuesday and Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Interestingly enough, the Red Sox bats are starting to heat up just as the arms are looking like question marks. Adrian Gonzalez in particular is exploding. The key offseason acquisition has six homers in his last nine games. Even Carl Crawford is showing signs of life, raising his averaging from .155 to .218 in 11 games this month.<\/p>\n

But the pitching staff has been a rollercoaster; Boston was supposed to have one of the American League\u2019s top rotations but its team ERA is in the bottom third of the league. Clay Buchholz has been partially responsible for Boston\u2019s struggles \u2013 he was 1-3 with a 5.33 ERA in April \u2013 but he\u2019s coming around with a 1.54 ERA and two victories in two May starts.<\/p>\n

New York Yankees (20-13 through May 10)<\/strong>
\nBartolo Colon (2-1, 3.86)<\/p>\n

That the New York Yankees have the American League\u2019s top offense comes as no surprise. Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, Robinson Cano, Curtis Granderson \u2013 you get the picture. They can mash. The bigger surprise has been the team\u2019s competent pitching. \"Bet<\/a><\/p>\n

The arms were supposed to be the Yankees\u2019 Achilles heel. Their staff hasn\u2019t been perfect but two of their seemingly laughable stopgaps, washed-up Freddy Garcia and Bartolo Colon, have been surprisingly competent.<\/p>\n

Well, Colon was <\/em>for a month. In May, he\u2019s been torched for eight runs and four homers in 11.1 innings over his last two outings.<\/p>\n

Colon has been better at home than away, and Buchholz doesn\u2019t have a great history against the Yankees, but I still like Boston on Friday night. Lefthanded hitters are batting .311 off Colon this season; that\u2019s music to the streaking Gonzalez and Crawford\u2019s ears. Also, the guy with the most hits off Buchholz, Robinson Cano (.529 career), may not play after getting beaned in the head on Wednesday night. <\/p>\n

The Red Sox are the educated pick.<\/p>\n
