The Washington Capitals are officially on the ropes. After they made fairly easy work of the New York Rangers in round one, the series against the Tampa Bay Lightning must feel like a bad dream. One minute, they\u2019re winning Game 3, on the way to making the series 2-1 and ensuring a crucial Game 5 back in Washington; the next, Tampa gets two goals in 24 seconds from Steven Stamkos and Ryan Malone and opens up a 3-0 series lead.<\/p>\n

The Lightning seem to gain more swagger by the game. They\u2019ve won six straight since falling behind 3-1 in their opening-round series with the Pittsburgh Penguins. It seems like Vinny Lecavalier in particular has saved his best hockey for the playoffs after a middling regular-season campaign. Also, though Dwyane Roloson was ordinary in Game 2, he has yet to put up a stinker in net. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The Capitals can\u2019t say the same. Their supposedly remedied areas are showing cracks in the armor. After a dynamite first round against the Rangers, Michael Neuvirth has allowed three or more goals in five of his last six games and has a putrid .868 save percentage against Tampa Bay. Defenseman Mike Green is also questionable for Game 4 with a lower-body injury; the Caps desperately need his big minutes.<\/p>\n

I think the writing is on the wall for the Washington Capitals \u2013 and for head coach Bruce Boudreau. This team just can\u2019t find its identity. It suppressed its explosive offense \u2013 and Alexander Ovechkin \u2013 in favor of improved defensive commitment this season. The idea makes sense but doesn\u2019t seem to be working; the Caps look like a team trying to force a gameplan that doesn\u2019t suit their personnel.<\/p>\n

To me, it\u2019s too late for Washington to turn things around. I don\u2019t think this is a mentally tough hockey club and I\u2019m not convinced these guys want to play for Boudreau anymore. I never thought I\u2019d say it before the series started \u2013 but I think Washington will bow out tonight. Prove me wrong, boys.<\/p>\n
