LAST WEEK<\/strong>: It was ho-hum for the Nick Watney pick. He was hardly bad with his 20th<\/sup>-place finish last week at the Zurich Classic. Another guy we were eying, Bubba Watson, took the prize. Is Bubba beginning a hot streak? And should we hop aboard the hype train?<\/p>\n

Quail Hollow, host of the Wells Fargo Championship this week, plays as tough as any non-major championship course. It was the second-most difficult part-72 in a non-major last year, its final three holes ranked as the toughest, and it was the hardest in proximity to hole. Good scrambling is important since the greens are hard to hit and driving distance is a plus, too.<\/p>\n

Phil Mickelson <\/strong>
\nWells Fargo Championship odds: +1015<\/p>\n

Phil always seems to make things interesting at Quail Hollow. He was second place last year and has six top-12 finishes in seven tries at this tournament. He leads the Tour in birdies or better on par 5s and could use that ability to get a leg up on those longer holes.<\/p>\n

Rory McIlroy<\/strong>
\nWells Fargo Championship odds: +1215<\/p>\n

McIlroy won last year\u2019s tourney with a spectacular finish, shooting 66-62 on the final two days. He\u2019s a good play because of his past success and length off the tee. However, he doesn\u2019t have a top-nine finish this season and hasn\u2019t played a PGA event since his Masters meltdown.<\/p>\n

Martin Kaymer <\/strong>
\nWells Fargo Championship odds: +1415<\/p>\n

Kaymer\u2019s great 2010 and short-lived perch atop the world rankings earn him the +1415 odds but I wonder if he\u2019s fool\u2019s gold this week. Before finishing ninth at Malaysia, he\u2019d missed four straight cuts. He\u2019s simply not playing well right now.<\/p>\n

Nick Watney <\/strong>
\nWells Fargo Championship odds: +1850<\/p>\n

Watney remains a guy we have to consider every week. He leads the Tour in all-around ranking and is second in adjusted scoring average. He also has five top-25 finishes at the Wells Fargo. He could win another event any week now.<\/p>\n

Dustin Johnson <\/strong>
\nWells Fargo Championship odds: +1850<\/p>\n

Johnson is a bit more under the radar this season because of his inconsistency; he\u2019s missed the cut in two of his last four stroke-play starts on the PGA Tour. But his length off the tee remains an asset and he looked solid in South Korea with a fourth-place finish in his last outing. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

SOLID PICKS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jim Furyk<\/strong>
\nWells Fargo Championship odds: +2250<\/p>\n

Furyk is a straight line at Quail Hollow, having won there in 2006 and finished at least 11th<\/sup> in his last three trips. Furyk isn\u2019t in his 2010 form but he\u2019s heating up with four straight top-25s. He\u2019s a sneaky-good play with better value than some of the other big names.<\/p>\n

Bubba Watson<\/strong>
\nWells Fargo Championship odds: +2250<\/p>\n

Some bettors think it\u2019s silly to chase a guy who just won but Bubba Watson may be an exception to that rule. Since the course favors long hitters, it already favors him. Factor in that he leads the Tour in greens in regulation and it seems like Bubba has an excellent chance to make it two straight victories.<\/p>\n

THE SLEEPER<\/strong><\/p>\n

Martin Laird<\/strong>
\nWells Fargo Championship odds: +3250<\/p>\n

Laird warrants consideration because of his decent value and because he\u2019s very strong in the key stat of bogey avoidance. With five top-10s in 10 starts this season, he\u2019s a rock-solid guy who gives you better return for your money than the more established names do \u2013 even though he\u2019s playing just as well.<\/p>\n

The pick:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mickelson, Watson and Laird are the names that stick out at me. I\u2019ll scratch Watson first simply because I can\u2019t get a read on him; every time I pick him, he flops. Since I like Mickelson\u2019s ability to go low and take chances on this type of course, I\u2019ll roll the dice on him this week.<\/p>\n
