LAST WEEK<\/strong>: We weren\u2019t totally off the mark with our Steve Stricker pick \u2013 his 11th<\/sup>-place finish wasn\u2019t bad at all \u2013 but a few under-the-radar golfers rose to the top at the Masters. Charl Schwartzel and guys like Adam Scott and Geoff Ogilvy (heck, even Tiger Woods) reminded us that they\u2019re still good enough to win every week. So we can\u2019t forget about them at the Valero Texas Open.<\/p>\n

The Valero Texas Open this week will test golfers in many ways. In addition to the winds that usually swirl around the track, TPC San Antonio was the sixth-most difficult in fairways hit and seventh in greens in regulation last season. Good all-around ball-strikers are the guys to target.<\/p>\n

THE CONTENDERS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Geoff Ogilvy<\/strong>
\nValero Texas Open odds: +1015<\/p>\n

Geoff Ogilvy has never played TPC San Antonio but he was hitting the ball right on the screws at Augusta. He posted three rounds in the 60s at Augusta last week en route to a fourth-place finish. Ogilvy has been somewhat of a forgotten man over the last year but the former major champion is still young enough that he could be \u201cback.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adam Scott<\/strong>
\nValero Texas Open odds: +1215<\/p>\n

On paper, Scott couldn\u2019t look much better. He finished second at the Masters last week and he\u2019s the defending Valero Texas Open champ. Scott is 15th<\/sup> on Tour in greens in regulation and 10th<\/sup> in total driving. The only strike on Scott is \u201codds\u201d; the odds of repeating in a tournament and posting back to back top-two finishes in one season aren\u2019t great.<\/p>\n

Martin Laird<\/strong>
\nValero Texas Open odds: +1850<\/p>\n

Laird looks like a rock-solid choice this week. He\u2019s been consistent this season, with seven top-25 finishes, and he\u2019s seventh on Tour in the all-around ranking. He seems to be in contention almost every week, the regardless of the track, which reflects good ball striking.<\/p>\n

SOLID PICKS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bo Van Pelt<\/strong>
\nValero Texas Open odds: +2250<\/p>\n

Van Pelt is streaky and he did flash some signs of a hot streak at the Masters, eagling two holes on Sunday. But he has just one top-10 this season and was a ho-hum 28th<\/sup> at the Valero Texas Open last year. He doesn\u2019t knock my socks off. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Marc Leishman<\/strong>
\nValero Texas Open odds: +3250<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re a believer in guys who are suited to certain conditions, you should pay attention to Leishman. He\u2019s known for being a solid wind player. However, he has just one top-15 in his last seven starts, so I think the negatives outweigh the positives with him.<\/p>\n

Ryan Palmer<\/strong>
\nValero Texas Open odds: +3550<\/p>\n

Palmer looks like a sneaky mid-range play. He was sharp at the Masters, finishing 10th<\/sup> and hitting more than 70 per cent of his fairways. He also finished ninth last year. He\u2019s heating up and he\u2019s a reasonable ball striker with a respectable history at TPC San Antonio.<\/p>\n

THE SLEEPERS<\/strong><\/p>\n

J.J. Henry<\/strong>
\nValero Texas Open odds: +4050<\/p>\n

Henry fits the bill as yet another potential pick who doesn\u2019t scream \u201cwinner\u201d to us but shows some decent peripheral stats. Six top-25 finishes this season. He\u2019s a top-21 guy in total driving, greens in regulation and adjusted scoring average. Does that make him the <\/em>golfer to pick this week? I wouldn\u2019t say so, but he\u2019s certainly not an uneducated choise.<\/p>\n

Jimmy Walker<\/strong>
\nValero Texas Open odds: +4550<\/p>\n

Walker\u2019s numbers are strange this season. He\u2019s sixth on Tour in adjusted scoring average yet hasn\u2019t had a top-25 finish in his last four tries. Still, the Texas native finished third at TPC San Antonio last season, showing great touch around the greens. Maybe some home cooking will get him hot?<\/p>\n

The pick:<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is the first time in a while that no one golfer really speaks to me. In that type of situation, I like to find a guy who is reliable \u2013 consistent and displaying the skills necessary to win at the current course. To me, that makes Martin Laird the pick. He always seems to be in the mix, he\u2019s striking the ball well and he\u2019s due for a win.<\/p>\n
