The Shell Houston Open marks the last tune-up before the Masters next week. Anyone wanting to succeed this week at Redstone\u2019s Tournament Course needs putting and the ability to get up and down more than anything else. Keeping those skills in mind, let\u2019s examine the field.<\/p>\n

THE CONTENDERS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lee Westwood<\/strong>
\nShell Houston Open odds: +1215<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve yet to see the brief world No. 1 crack a top 10 this season, so picking Westwood is somewhat of a leap of faith right now. But he was eighth and 11th<\/sup> at Redstone over the last two seasons and led the field in birdies last year. He knows how to go low at this course.<\/p>\n

Matt Kuchar<\/strong>
\nShell Houston Open odds: +1215<\/p>\n

Kuchar just gets it done week-in, week out, doesn\u2019t he? He has five top-10s in seven tries. He \u2018s also a top-10 guy on Tour in the crucial categories for this the Shell Houston Open: putting and scrambling. He\u2019s obviously a top-notch pick.<\/p>\n

Phil Mickelson <\/strong>
\nShell Houston Open odds: +1415<\/p>\n

Lefty continues to underwhelm \u2013 to point that it\u2019s time to wonder if his prime is over. He\u2019s made plenty of birdies this season but his putter has been ho-hum. Same goes for his scrambling. I\u2019ll give Mickelson the Tiger treatment and let him earn back my trust.<\/p>\n

Hunter Mahan<\/strong>
\nShell Houston Open odds: +1615<\/p>\n

Mahan feels like half a good play. He has a strong history at this tournament, cracking the top 11 three times in five tries, and he\u2019s a solid putter. But Mahan\u2019s inability to scramble scares me away. He\u2019s 121st<\/sup> on Tour in sand saves.<\/p>\n

Steve Stricker<\/strong>
\nShell Houston Open odds: +1850<\/p>\n

If only Stricker was playing more this season. His soft touch with the putter and around the greens make him the ideal player type for the Shell Houston Open. He seems like every bit as strong of a play as Kuchar except for the fact that Kuchar is playing more \u2013 and sharper \u2013 right now.<\/p>\n

SOLID PICKS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Marc Leishman<\/strong>
\nShell Houston Open odds: +3550<\/p>\n

Leishman raised some eyebrows last week at Bay Hill when he made a late charge and led the field in putting en route to a third-place finish. Given his skill with the putter and in scrambling, he\u2019s an intriguing pick with decent value at +3550. But he\u2019s never won a PGA Tour event before. That obviously gives me pause. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Jason Day<\/strong>
\nShell Houston Open odds: +4050<\/p>\n

Day is another guy whose strengths match Redstone nicely but he doesn\u2019t excite me much. The value is nice but nothing about his results this season (T-9, T-20, missed cut, T-9, T-45, T-51) suggests he\u2019s about to bust out.<\/p>\n

THE SLEEPER<\/strong><\/p>\n

Steve Marino<\/strong>
\nShell Houston Open odds: +4550<\/p>\n

Maybe he\u2019ll come back angry after he finished second for the second time this season last week? Marino is certainly due for a PGA victory but I don\u2019t think it\u2019ll come this week. He\u2019s not a good enough putter to stand out at Redstone.<\/p>\n

THE PICK<\/strong><\/p>\n

For a change, I\u2019m not crazy about a million different golfers this week. It\u2019s kind of nice. To me, it\u2019s Kuchar, Stricker, and the rest. If Stricker offered a significantly better return than Kuchar, I might pick him. But he only gives you slightly more bang for your buck. That makes me lean toward Kuchar, who is just firing on all cylinders right now.<\/p>\n
