Judging by the way that the experts are talking about the Virginia Commonwealth Rams, you would think that the surprise team from the Colonial has already clinched the 2011 NCAA national title. That’s hardly the case however as VCU gets set to take on the Florida State Seminoles in the Sweet 16 of the Southwest region bracket, in the first ever meeting featuring a 10 and 11 seed. Regardless of their rankings, the Seminoles will provide the Virginia Commonwealth’s toughest test of the tournament so far, and that will reveal where these teams truly stand.<\/p>\n

Notable wins over the Georgetown Hoyas and Purdue Boilermakers undoubtedly deserve recognition, but the fact that it’s the Rams that have taken out these contenders may have blinded observers to just how poorly these teams were playing before they were eliminated. \"Buy<\/a><\/p>\n

The Hoyas had barely made it out of the Big East after three straight losses to close their regular season, and then another in the opening round of the conference title tournament against eventual champions Connecticut. The Boilermakers didn’t provide much more of a test after rebounding from consecutive Big Ten losses with a win over St. Peter’s. While the Rams deserve credit for taking down teams from stronger conferences, they may be somewhat overrated heading into the Sweet 16.<\/p>\n

That’s something that the Seminoles will be eager to prove after a couple of huge wins over the Texas A&M Aggies and Notre Dame Fighting Irish through their first two tournament games. Florida State was an afterthought finishing behind the Duke Blue Devils and North Carolina Tar Heels in the ACC, and that may have left them somewhat underrated heading into this tournament. The Seminoles had four players reach double-digit scoring totals in their win over Notre Dame, proving that they have more than just a stifling defense. <\/p>\n

That group was led by 14 points from Bernard James, who reached a double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds.<\/p>\n

The Seminoles won’t sit back and allow VCU to control the flow of the game, and their defense should be able to slow the Rams’ offense enough to earn a trip to the Elite Eight. The Colonial champions are happy just to have gotten this far, while Florida State still has a lot to prove.<\/p>\n
