The St. Peter\u2019s Peacocks weren\u2019t expected to be in this spot, but they relished the underdog role all year and they are now a part of March Madness. Just three years ago this St. Peter\u2019s team won only six games all year, but they have slowly turned the corner and they stunned everyone by winning the MAAC tournament. Purdue would have likely been the top team in the nation at the beginning of this year if it weren\u2019t for an injury to Robbie Hummel. Hummel had been the Boilermakers best player, but he missed the entire year with a knee injury.<\/p>\n

Still, Matt Painter and this Purdue team played solid basketball and finished as the runner-up to Ohio State in the Big Ten Conference regular season standings. The Boilermakers are heavy favorites to get through to the second round. Let\u2019s take a quick look at both teams.<\/p>\n

St. Peter\u2019s is a team that wins with their terrific defense. The Peacocks ranked very high nationally on the defensive end the entire year. St. Peter\u2019s allowed opponents to shoot just 37.4% this year. The Peacocks gave up only 59.9 points per game. On the offensive end this team relies heavily on the three-point shot. Wesley Jenkins is the team\u2019s leading scorer, and he shoots 42% from beyond the arc. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The team has four players who average ten points or more each game. The negative for St. Peter\u2019s is that they don\u2019t shoot the ball well as a team. The Peacocks shoot only 40% as a team, which is one of the worst marks in the nation.<\/p>\n

Purdue did a great job keeping it together without Robbie Hummel this year. JaJuan Johnson was the Big Ten\u2019s player of the year, and he was a great leader for the Boilermakers. Johnson averaged 20.6 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. He also shot 50% from the floor. E\u2019Twaun Moore is a great scorer, and he definitely has the ability to take over a game. Moore single-handedly carried Purdue to a huge victory over Ohio State in February.<\/p>\n

Purdue wins games with their terrific defense as well, and they allow only 61 points per game. The Boilermakers finished the season slowly, but Matt Painter is a great coach and I expect this team to be ready for the NCAA Tournament.<\/p>\n
