Sports News – NFL news: Witness says Meriweather isn\u2019t the shooter; Tempers flare in CBA negotiations<\/strong><\/p>\n

Witness says Meriweather isn\u2019t the shooter<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Maybe Brandon Meriweather didn\u2019t shoot two people after all. Well, at least according to one of his relatives. The unnamed person said that Meriweather wasn\u2019t carrying a gun and was playing peacemaker in the fight with the two victims before someone else opened fire.<\/p>\n

The NFL labor agreement expires tonight and things aren\u2019t looking good. The owners and players have resorted to verbal jabs. Lead NFL negotiator Jeff Pash openly questioned the union\u2019s desire to get a deal done, saying he doesn\u2019t know \u201cif both sides have an equal commitment.\u201d Union head DeMaurice Smith countered by discussing the revelation that the owners were trying to strike a TV deal that would pay them $4 billion in the event of a lockout regardless of whether or not any games were played.<\/p>\n

NHL news: Joe Thornton accuses NHL of being lenient toward Boston; Kubina suspended; Gagner, Steen, Jackman out for season<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sharks center Joe Thornton made a bold accusation toward the NHL yesterday, suggesting that the league is more lenient toward the Boston Bruins when it comes to punishing players for questionable behavior.<\/p>\n

Colin Campbell is the NHL\u2019s vice-president of hockey operations and almost always involved in disciplinary action. His son, Gregory, plays for the Boston Bruins. Thornton said he isn\u2019t assuming that\u2019s why the Bruins get so many breaks, but that \u201cit just seems like they have a horseshoe.\u201d He was obviously referring to the lack of discipline for Zdeno Chara\u2019s hit on Max Pacioretty this week. Campbell wasn\u2019t involved in the ruling because of a conflict of interest with his son\u2019s team.<\/p>\n

Supporting Thornton\u2019s theory, the NHL suspended Pavel Kubina yesterday after he elbowed Chicago\u2019s Dave Bolland in the head during Wednesday\u2019s game. Kubina will sit out three games.<\/p>\n

Oilers center Sam Gagner is out for the season. He suffered a deep wrist laceration from a teammate\u2019s skate on Thursday and had surgery yesterday. The St. Louis Blues have probably lost two of their own guys for the year as well. Alex Steen is out with a high ankle sprain and Barret Jackman had finger surgery. Both guys are expected to miss four to six weeks and, with the Blues out of the Western Conference playoff picture, that means their seasons are all but over. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

NBA news: Gerald Wallace calls Bobcats trade \u201cstab in the back\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Even though Gerald Wallace got dealt from the mediocre Charlotte Bobcats to the superior Portland Trail Blazers, he\u2019s still sore about the trade. He said this week that the trade was a \u201cstab in the back\u201d and \u201cslap in the face.\u201d He\u2019s most angry with Michael Jordan, who told him the day of the deal that no trades were happening.<\/p>\n

Wallace was the last remaining member of the original Charlotte Bobcats.<\/p>\n

MLB news: Japanese players affected by Earthquake; Jon Garland out with oblique strain<\/strong><\/p>\n

The devastating, 8.9-magnitude Earthquake that hit Japan is having an effect on some Major League Baseball players. Takashi Saito and Kei Igawa have both left their respective training camps as they try to locate family members. Saito hasn\u2019t found his parents and Igawa said he\u2019s hometown was hit by a tsunami.<\/p>\n

Dodgers starter Jon Garland\u2019s 2011 campaign will start late. He strained his oblique muscle during an exhibition start Wednesday and will miss four to six weeks.<\/p>\n
