Chara hit becomes national scandal in Canada<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n

Whether or not Zdeno Chara\u2019s hit on Max Pacioretty was intentional, it left the Montreal Canadiens forward with a concussion and a fractured vertebra. So it\u2019s somewhat understandable that a national outrage ensued after the NHL decided not to suspend, fine or discipline Chara in any way.<\/p>\n

The province of Quebec\u2019s Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions has requested and received an official police investigation into the Chara hit from the City of Montreal. Pacioretty, still in hospital, commented on the incident, explaining that he was \u201cupset and disgusted that the league didn\u2019t think of enough of [the hit] to suspend him.<\/p>\n

The hit has caused so much controversy that Air Canada, one of the NHL\u2019s biggest sponsors, has threatened to withdraw its sponsorship unless the NHL takes action to reduce or prevent serious injuries like Pacioretty\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Mike Green\u2019s frustrations just won\u2019t end. The star Washington Capitals defenseman already missed significant time this season after taking a puck to the ear. Now, it appears he\u2019s suffered a concussion. He\u2019s missed five games since taking an elbow to the head from the Rangers\u2019 Derek Stepan on February 5. Coach Bruce Boudreau won\u2019t let Green return to game action until he\u2019s symptom-free.<\/p>\n

NCAA basketball news: Referees withdraw from Big East tourney after blown call decides game<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you missed St. John\u2019s vs. Rutgers in the Big East Tournament yesterday, you missed a wild one in NCAA basketball. The Red Storm had a 65-63 lead over Rutgers with 4.9 seconds left in the fourth quarter when Justin Brownlee stole a deflected Rutgers pass. Brownlee began to celebrate and hurled the ball into the stands, not realizing that he did so with 1.7 seconds remaining on the clock.<\/p>\n

The toss into the stands with time still left should\u2019ve resulted in a technical foul for St. John\u2019s and two potentially game-tying shots for Rutgers. The officials who called that game, Jim Burr, Tim Higgins and Earl Walton, have all voluntarily withdrawn from the tournament.<\/p>\n

NBA news: Pat Riley dismisses Spoelstra firing rumors; Kevin Love sets double-double record; Carlos Boozer sprains ankle<\/strong><\/p>\n

The media circus continues to hound the slumping, crying Miami Heat. Pat Riley denied rumors this week that he was ready to fire coach Erik Spoelstra, insisting that the media were just stirring up the story. Spoelstra also dismissed Chris Bosh\u2019s claims after a loss that he wasn\u2019t getting the ball in the low post enough, saying the Heat players\u2019 minds are simply cluttered right now. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Kevin Love overcame a wonky knee to set a new NBA record for consecutive double-doubles last night. He reached 10 points and 10 rebounds by the second quarter, recording his record 52 straight double-double.<\/p>\n

Just when the Bulls looked as healthy as any Eastern Conference contender, the injury bug has bitten Carlos Boozer again. The big man hurt his ankle during Chicago\u2019s win over Charlotte last night. X-Rays were negative but he has a sprain.<\/p>\n

MLB news: Miguel Cabrera told police to shoot him during DUI arrest; Phillies scouting Michael Young<\/strong><\/p>\n

More details have emerged from the wild night on which Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera was arrested last month. Not only did he threaten bar patrons, saying \u201cI will kill all of you and blow this place up\u201d before driving away drunk, he reportedly told police to \u201cshoot me\u201d and \u201ckill me\u201d during his arrest.<\/p>\n

More evidence that Chase Utley\u2019s knee is a major concern: the Phillies are scouting the disgruntled Texas Ranger infielder Michael Young as a potential stopgap. Young, who is owed $16 million this season, can play second base, third base and shortstop.<\/p>\n

NFL news: Brandon Meriweather accused of shooting two people; 18-game schedule idea is scrapped<\/strong><\/p>\n

New England Patriots safety Brandon Meriweather got hit with a wild accusation today: shooting two men. Reportedly, the victims are former high-school classmates of Meriweather\u2019s. They showed up at a house party after Meriweather allegedly roughed up one of the victim\u2019s sister earlier that night. Allegedly, Meriweather shot both men, one in the face and one in the head. Both are still alive and made the accusations themselves. Their lawyer, however, has openly expressed his doubts about Meriweather being the actual shooter. More details should unfold soon.<\/p>\n

The 18-game NFL schedule idea is officially kaput. The NFL players\u2019 union vetoed it during negotiations this week. The deadline for the current CBA to expire is set for Friday night.<\/p>\n
