If No. 24 Virginia Tech wants to stake its claim to a good seeding in March Madness, it better make short work of Georgia Tech in its ACC Tournament opener this Thursday. Considering the Hokies crushed Georgia Tech 102-77 less than a month ago, you\u2019d think they might be more than a five-point favorite. Sure, Virginia Tech is a mediocre 4-6 on the road this season, but it\u2019s also 4-1 in neutral-site games. So what gives?<\/p>\n

Maybe the oddsmakers are concerned with Virginia Tech\u2019s recent offensive drought. The Hokies dropped the 102 on Georgia Tech and 91 on Maryland in consecutive games but, since then, they\u2019ve scored 64 or fewer points in four of their last five games, going 2-3 over that span. The Hokies stumble into the tournament on a two-game losing streak. They can\u2019t really blame top scorer Malcolm Delaney for their troubles, as he\u2019s scored at least 17 points in nine of his last 10 games. He just needs more support. \"Online<\/p>\n

While Georgia Tech owns the far less impressive record at 13-17 compared to Virginia Tech\u2019s 19-10, the Yellow Jackets enter the ACC tournament hotter, having won two straight games. Most recently, they took down a decent Miami team.<\/p>\n

Still \u2013 bettors shouldn\u2019t put too much stock into the Yellow Jackets\u2019 short-lived success. This is still a pretty bad team. If you believe in a team like Kansas, you believe that shooting wins games. And Georgia Tech can\u2019t shoot. The Yellow Jackets are 301st in the nation in field-goal percentage. Top shooter Glen Rice Jr. leads the team at 41 per cent (that\u2019s not from three-point range).<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t overthink this bet. Virginia Tech isn\u2019t playing great right now but it\u2019s the much better team and it\u2019s facing one of the country\u2019s most horrifically bad shooting squads. The Hokies have won four of the last five against Georgia Tech and should make it five of six while covering the spread.<\/p>\n
