The ACC Tournament gets underway Thursday and an old rivalry will resume when N.C. State battles Maryland. The Wolfpack are fittingly listed as 5.5-point underdogs against Maryland, as they have several obstacles to overcome in this matchup.<\/p>\n

For one, Maryland absolutely dominates the recent history, The Terrapins have won eight straight meetings with N.C. State, including three times on the road and four times by 14 or more points. So it\u2019s not like N.C. State has at least kept things close and made itself a worthwhile bet against Maryland; the Wolfpack are 1-8 against the spread over the last nine games of this series.<\/p>\n

Even though the game will be played in North Carolina, it won\u2019t be in N.C. State\u2019s home building, so this is almost like a road or at least a neutral game. That\u2019s another problem for the Wolfpack, as they\u2019re 4-10 this season in games played away from home (road and neutral). \"Online<\/p>\n

The news keeps getting worse for N.C. State as we examine every facet of this matchup. The Wolfpack limp into the ACC tourney having lost four of five and seven of 10. That slump includes and 87-80 loss to Maryland on February 20.<\/p>\n

Though the Wolfpack lack a go-to guy on offense, with only C.J. Leslie and Tracy Smith averaging double figures, they still score more than 70 points a game, largely because they have five guys averaging nine or more points per game. This is a spread-the-wealth offense.<\/p>\n

Defensively, N.C. State is among the nation\u2019s worst, and that doesn\u2019t bode well against a Maryland team that ranks 21st in the nation with 77.1 points per game. Jordan Williams is their main offensive weapon. He was as beast on the boards this year, averaging 11.6 rebounds to go with his 16.9 points per game.<\/p>\n

Maryland doesn\u2019t carry much momentum into its ACC tourney opener, having lost three straight, but struggling N.C. State is the perfect remedy. I don\u2019t expect the Terps to have too much trouble covering the spread against their old whipping boy.<\/p>\n
