In the Mountain West Conference Tournament, teams will desperately try to make a final push in pursuit of an NCAA Tournament automatic bid. They\u2019ll begin that push in the quarterfinals.<\/em><\/p>\n

It\u2019s quarterfinal Thursday at the Mountain West Conference Tournament at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. This contest between Utah and San Diego State is the first of two night-session quarterfinals on Thursday. Utah is the No. 7 seed while San Diego State is the No. 2 seed in this event.<\/p>\n

Utah made the NCAA Tournament in 2009 but has since plummeted to the bottom rung of the Mountain West. Coach Jim Boylen is viewed as a dead coach walking, a man who is likely to be fired once his season ends. He\u2019s been viewed in a negative light since Double-digit scorers Carlon Brown and Marshall Henderson left the program after last season. \"The<\/a><\/p>\n

That unhappy conclusion is almost certain to come in this game, because Utah\u2019s opponent is one of the top 15 teams in the country. San Diego State is balanced and powerful and should run roughshod over the Utes within six to eight feet of the basket.<\/p>\n

Utah has absolutely nobody who can hang with San Diego State\u2019s supremely athletic and muscular frontline, led by NBA-ready prospect Kawhi Leonard, a monster on the glass. Malcolm Thomas will be a problem for them as well.<\/p>\n

These two teams met on Christmas Day and Utah actually only lost by three points. Point guard Josh Wallace racked up 24 points in that contest but in Thursday\u2019s matchup, they will need much more from him \u2013 and everyone else \u2013 if they have a prayer of pulling off this upset.<\/p>\n

Pick San Diego State for the simplest and best possible reason: The Aztecs are a million miles better than Utah at every spot on the floor. The fact that San Diego State is rested (with four days off before this game) won\u2019t exactly hurt, either.<\/p>\n
