The details of the moment were simple yet stunning: It\u2019s not often that a regular-season game reduces a bunch of grown young men to tears, but that\u2019s exactly what happened in the Miami Heat\u2019s locker room this past Sunday after an 87-86 loss to the Chicago Bulls in Miami.<\/p>\n

The Heat have lost four games in a row and have fallen out of the top two spots in the Eastern Conference, meaning that if the season ended today, they\u2019d have home-court advantage for just the first round of the playoffs (assuming that the top seeds move on). Coach Erik Spoelstra\u2019s team would have to go on the road and win at least one game in the Eastern Conference Semifinals and the East Finals in order to arrive at the NBA Finals.<\/p>\n

The bigger concern \u2013 at least for the short term \u2013 isn\u2019t just that they have lost contests recently but the manner in which they have lost. First, they blew a 24-point halftime lead to the Orlando Magic at home on Thursday, then they lost by 30 to the San Antonio Spurs on Friday before failing at home once again on Sunday to the Bulls.<\/p>\n

The problem with the Heat is a simple but profound one: This team just doesn\u2019t close games well, a rather astonishing fact in light of the presence of both LeBron James and Dwyane Wade on the floor. \"The<\/a><\/p>\n

Despite the multi-superstar lineup Miami possesses, the Heat \u2013 courtesy of reporter Ethan Skolnick \u2013 are now 1-for-16 on game-winning or game-tying shot attempts in the final 10 seconds of regulation or overtime. That\u2019s a mind-blowing statistic for a team with LeBron and Wade on the floor in crunch time.<\/p>\n

Both LeBron and Wade missed shots in the final 10 seconds of the loss to Chicago on Sunday, although LeBron\u2019s look at the basket was much easier than the desperation fall-away jumper Wade launched just before the final horn.<\/p>\n

At any rate, there\u2019s too much frustration mounting in the Miami locker room for this team to keep losing.<\/p>\n

At some point, the Heat should take out their immense frustrations on a beatable opponent, especially at home. The Portland Trail Blazers, making a trek across the United States for an Eastern swing, represent an ideal candidate. Take Miami because of the Blazers\u2019 travel itinerary and because the laws of averages say that Miami can\u2019t continue to lose this many games.<\/p>\n
