LAST WEEK: So we went with Justin Rose and came up short at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. Rose\u2019s draw just didn\u2019t work out. He had to face new world No. 1 Martin Kaymer and lost a 20-hole war. Hopefully a return to traditional golf betting can yield us a win this week.<\/p>\n

The Honda Classic isn\u2019t a major championship but it could easily fool someone into thinking it is. Its field is littered with elite players (that doesn\u2019t include no-show Tiger Woods; sorry, but he ain\u2019t elite anymore) and the host course, PGA National, played as the hardest non-major in relation to par last year.<\/p>\n

You need every shot in the bag to succeed here so the focus for the Honda Classic is on guys who are well-rounded and playing strong golf right now.<\/p>\n

THE ELITE<\/strong><\/p>\n

Graeme McDowell<\/strong>
\nHonda Classic odds: +1215<\/p>\n

Even though he made a first-round exit at the Match Play last week, you could argue that McDowell is rested as a result. He\u2019s become an elite player and was strong for three of four days at the Honda Classic last year, cracking the top 10 in greens and putting.<\/p>\n

Lee Westwood<\/strong>
\nHonda Classic odds: +1215<\/p>\n

No longer the world\u2019s top-ranked player, Westwood didn\u2019t show the fire to keep the honor. He hasn\u2019t posted a top-10 on the European or PGA Tour so far this season and was just OK at the Match Play en route to a 17th<\/sup>-place last week. He finished ninth the last time he played the Honda Classic but I\u2019ll lean toward someone with more momentum \u2013 and better sportsbook value \u2013 than Westwood.<\/p>\n

Luke Donald<\/strong>
\nHonda Classic odds: +1415<\/p>\n

Donald works as a pick on two levels. For one, he\u2019s technically the hottest golfer out there, having dominated the Match Play for a victory last week. He also finished second the last time he played the Honda Classic and owns the PGA National course record at 64. Aside from his small return at +1415, what\u2019s not to like?<\/p>\n

THE CONTENDERS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rory McIlroy<\/strong>
\nHonda Classic odds: +1615<\/p>\n

McIlroy struggled at PGA National last year but has six straight top-10s in stroke-play starts. He\u2019s always an intriguing bet because of his length. He also has something to prove after criticizing Tiger last week. He\u2019s a reasonable pick. <\/p>\n

Matt Kuchar<\/strong>
\nHonda Classic odds: +1850<\/p>\n

Kuchar epitomizes my philosophy for handicapping this tournament. He has no real success at the Honda Classic but his all-around game is in a great place, so I like him. Kuchar has four top-sevens already this season and is a top-20 guy in both greens in regulation and putting. He\u2019s showing no signs of slowing down. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

SOLID PICKS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Vijay Singh<\/strong>
\nHonda Classic odds: +2550<\/p>\n

Vijay seems to have a lot going for him this week. He finished second at the Northern Trust Open and, statistically, he\u2019s improved across the board in almost every faced of his game, including sand saves and scrambling. Still, he\u2019s not a young man and I won\u2019t trust him again until he wins something.<\/p>\n

Robert Allenby<\/strong>
\nHonda Classic odds: +2850<\/p>\n

Though Allenby missed the cut last year, he had three top fives at PGA National before that. His momentum isn\u2019t strong after he was tossed aside at the Match Play but he finished fourth in his last stroke-play start.<\/p>\n

THE SLEEPER<\/strong><\/p>\n

Brian Gay<\/strong>
\nHonda Classic odds: +5050<\/p>\n

Brian Gay looks like an excellent sleeper this week. According to peripheral stats, he\u2019s been arguably the Tour\u2019s top player this year, ranking first in fairways hit, sand saves and scoring average. He\u2019s also second in scrambling. The guy is playing great, with two top-fives already, and offers major sportsbook value.<\/p>\n

THE PICK<\/strong><\/p>\n

I find myself struggling with the same decision I had to make last week. Do I take the reliable guy or the sleeper who provides the big return? Last week, I went sleeper. This week, even though Gay looks strong, I\u2019m going with Kuchar. He\u2019s as good as any player in the world right now and he\u2019s due to be rewarded with another victory.<\/p>\n
