The Irish are in an unfamiliar place heading into tonight\u2019s game against the Providence Friars as the two square off in a late season Big East battle that carries two different meanings for each team.<\/p>\n

No. 9 Notre Dame will try to recover after having its seven-game win streak snapped with a 72-58 loss at West Virginia on Saturday. The Fighting Irish shot 35.0 percent — their lowest mark in conference play.<\/p>\n

The Irish didn\u2019t take very good care of the rock, turning the ball over 10 times and just couldn\u2019t seem to stay out of foul trouble, committing 21 fouls. Leading scorer Ben Hansbrough recorded a team season high in field goals attempted with 18 and did his best to keep the Fighting Irish in it with 19 points in 38 minutes. It was the senior guard\u2019s ninth straight double-digit point game. Carleton Scott helped out with a game-high 11 rebounds.<\/p>\n

It was a tough loss as it cost Notre Dame a chance to move within one game of first-place Pittsburgh, which lost to St. John’s on Saturday but maintained a two-game lead in the Big East race.<\/p>\n

Now coach Mike Brey will have to rally the troops as the team prepares head to Providence a team the Fighting Irish have won seven straight overall against, and five in a row on the road in the series. However, Brey\u2019s men will now have the daunting tasks off slowing down Big East scoring leader Marshon Brooks who is averaging 24.4 point per game and has posted decent numbers in his two career games against Notre Dame. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

But the worries for the men from South Bend doesn\u2019t end there. The Friars also boast the conference leader in assists in Vincent Council, who averages 6.2 per contest.<\/p>\n

Providence, though, has dropped four straight, with two disappointing home losses last week. The Friars fell 79-76 to lowly DePaul on Thursday and then 93-81 in overtime to Cincinnati on Saturday.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, the Friars have shown the ability to compete with the elite teams in the conference, beating then-No. 19 Louisville and then-No. 8 Villanova four days later back in late January. They also hung with the Hoyas losing a disappointing one on the road 83-81.<\/p>\n

Notre Dame had trouble getting the ball inside Saturday against West Virginia’s zone defense. The Irish’s 27 3-point attempts were their most in Big East action, and their 11 assists matched their fewest in a conference game.<\/p>\n

Matt\u2019s Free Pick: Notre Dame-<\/strong> Despite Notre Dame\u2019s inability to get the ball to their big men down low against WVU, they did shoot well from the perimeter combing for 50 percent. I expect them to be able to maintain that outside firepower while getting big men Tim Abromaitis and Scott involved down low to take this one on the road.<\/p>\n
