His return to the welterweight division was a glorious one, as he needed just 21 seconds to rearrange Matt Hughes’ face last November.

But Saturday’s fight is a different animal. Knocking out the washed up Hughes is a different story than taking out Jon Fitch, one of the UFC’s most underrated and consistently dominant fighters. Fitch has won 20 of his last 21 professional fights; relying on his long reach but primarily on his outstanding wrestling to dominate opponents.

There’s no doubting Penn’s amazing natural talents; he can box with the best of ’em and his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is amazing. But there’s also no doubt that Fitch is a horrible matchup for him. Penn struggles with (a) wrestlers and (b) wrestlers who are bigger than him. He got manhandled by St-Pierre the last time they fought and by Hughes in their second fight during Hughes’ prime. Fitch is precisely the type of fighter who smothers Penn’s strengths. He has a strong jaw to handle any power punches from Penn and good submission defense.

I’d love to see Penn do something spectacular – simply because I’m tired of watching Fitch. He’s among the sport’s most boring fighters. His last five wins have come via decision and his last eight fights went to decision. But he’s very good at what he does. I’d expect three rounds of Fitch lying on top of Penn while Penn struggles unsuccessfully to wriggle free. If Fitch can hold down the huge, dangerous Thiago Alves as easily as he did in his last bout, he can do the same with Penn. Pick: Fitch -190

Michael Bisping (20-3) vs Jorge Rivera (19-7)
UFC 127 odds: Bisping -330, Rivera +265

Ever since Michael Bisping suffered his famously devastating knockout loss to Dan Henderson, bettors have been afraid to throw down on him, worried about his chin. But Bisping survived Wanderlei Silva and Yoshihiro Akiyama without getting knocked out (though he lost to Silva), so maybe it’s time we started trusting him again.

Jorge Rivera has major knockout power, sure, but he’s not nearly as talented as Bisping. He can’t match Bisping’s speed, elusiveness or athleticism. It won’t necessarily be the most exciting fight but I think Bisping will stick-and-move his way to a decision victory. Pick: Bisping -330

George Sotiropoulos (14-2) vs Dennis Siver (17-7)
UFC 127 odds: Sotiropoulos -320, Siver +260

Is George Sotiropoulos one win away from earning a lightweight title shot? The contending picture is crowded but the Aussie Sotiropoulos certain deserves consideration. He’s a perfect 6-0 since entering the UFC and has beaten quality opponents like Joe Stevenson, Kurt Pellegrino and Joe Lauzon. Sotiropoulos is a very well-rounded fighter, a Jiu-Jitsu submission ace but also a guy who uses his long reach very well in the striking game.

His opponent, Dennis Siver, is a dangerous guy. Siver has heavy hands and devastating kicks; he’s also capable of pulling out submissions on the ground.

However, Siver is also a stump of a man at 5’7” compared to the lanky Sotiropoulos, who stands 5’10”. I think Sotiropoulos will use his reach to at least neutralize Siver’s standup attacks and eventually get this fight to the ground, where he is the superior fighter. Pick: Sotiropoulos -320

UFC 127: OFFICIAL FIGHT CARD

Main Event:
170 lbs: B.J.
