Just when we thought Mikhail Prokhorov and the New Jersey Nets were out of the Melo sweepstakes, they\u2019re back in the thick of it. Reportedly, both Prokhorov and the New York Knicks owner, James Dolan, plan to meet with Anthony\u2019s camp this weekend during the All-Star festivities in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

While Melo openly prefers the Knicks, the Denver Nuggets are higher on the package the Nets have to offer, which could include Derrick Favors and multiple first-round picks.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s sign of the apocalypse: the Magic Johnson\/Larry Bird rivalry is becoming a Broadway musical. Inspired by the highly positive response to the play \u201cLombardi,\u201d Broadway producers Fran Kimser and Tony Ponturo are green-lighting a play focusing on Magic and Bird\u2019s lives as they entered the league in 1979 right up until they were Dream Team teammates in 1992.<\/p>\n

NHL news: Kaberle booked for Boston? Senators make two minor moves; Canucks lose another defenseman<\/strong><\/p>\n

Could the NHL\u2019s version of the Carmelo Anthony drama finally, mercifully end today? It looks like a Tomas Kaberle trade to the Boston Bruins is imminent \u2013 so imminent that it may have already happened by the time you read these words. Sources suggest the Toronto Maple Leafs will receive Boston\u2019s first-round pick plus a young player (originally thought to be Blake Wheeler but now more likely to be Joe Colborne). Another team could jump in for Kaberle\u2019s services but the Bruins are the only team we know for certain that he\u2019d waive his no-trade clause to join.<\/p>\n

The Ottawa Senators continue to clean house. They shipped agitator Jarkko Ruutu to the Anaheim Ducks yesterday for a sixth-round draft pick. Today, they pulled off a curious move, swapping starting goalie Brian Elliott with Colorado\u2019s starter, Craig Anderson. Both are slated to become free agents this summer (Elliott restricted). \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The poor Vancouver Canucks can\u2019t make it through a game without losing another defenseman. They\u2019d already lost Alex Edler, Keith Ballard and Dan Hamhuis. The latest casualty is Kevin Bieksa, who should miss two to three weeks with a broken foot. He suffered the injury while blocking a shot during Tuesday\u2019s win over Minnesota.<\/p>\n

MLB news: No comeback for Gary Sheffield, Jim Edmonds<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gary Sheffield and Jim Edmonds both enjoyed solid careers as power-hitting outfielders but both appear to be ending their possible comeback bids. Sheff, who tallied 509 homers and had eight 30-homer seasons, said he called the MLB Players Association Wednesday to officially retire.<\/p>\n

Edmonds isn\u2019t officially retired but has decided not to report to the St. Louis Cardinals\u2019 camp as he recovers from offseason Achilles\u2019 tendon surgery.<\/p>\n

NFL news: Colts release Bob Sanders; no long-term offer for Vincent Jackson in San Diego<\/strong><\/p>\n

As talented a player as safety Bob Sanders is, the Indianapolis Colts just couldn\u2019t put up with his injuries any longer. They released him today, ending his seven-year tenure with the team. Sanders hasn\u2019t played a full season since 2007 and played just one game in 2010.<\/p>\n

Not surprisingly, San Diego Chargers\u2019 GM A.J. Smith said he isn\u2019t \u201ccomfortable\u201d negotiating a long-term extension with Vincent Jackson, who was given the franchise tag earlier this week. He suggested he\u2019d be open to making an offer if Jackson has a big 2011 season, however.<\/p>\n
