Just how far can the Clippers climb ?

(Previous rankings in brackets)

1. (3) San Antonio Spurs (36-6): It’s amazing to see a team on pace for 70 wins somehow be “under the radar.” The Spurs have been the model of consistency this season

2. (5) Boston Celtics (32-9): The East’s answer to San Antonio. The Heat and Knicks have been flashy but up-and-down. Take your pick between Kevin Garnett and Dwight Howard for Defensive Player of the Year.

3. (4) Los Angeles Lakers (31-13): The loss to Dallas last night was just their second in 10 games. Andrew Bynum’s health was improving but, low and behold, he dinged himself up again.

4. (11) New Orleans Hornets (27-16): Six straight wins? It still feels strange considering only two Hornet guys average more than 11 points per game.

5. (1) Miami Heat (31-13): The four straight losses show their chemistry isn’t totally set yet. But you know there’s a 15-game winning streak just around the corner.

6. (8) Atlanta Hawks (28-15): The Hawks are another team playing very good ball of late – but that we have trouble taking seriously. You just know they won’t match up with the juggernauts when the chips are down.

7. (6) Chicago Bulls (28-14): Joakim Noah remains sidelined and Carlos Boozer is battling an ankle injury. How many more wins would the Bulls have if they’d been healthy all year?

8. (2) Orlando Magic (27-15) Three losses over the last week but they all came on the road against good teams. The Magic will be fine. Is Dwight Howard the first-half MVP?

9. (7) Oklahoma City Thunder (27-15): Stumbling a bit but they’re not going anywhere. They have the talent to stay in contention. And Kevin Durant is just getting warmed up.

10. (9) Utah Jazz (27-15): Paul Millsap’s torrid play has slowed considerably. Looks like Deron Williams will have to carry the Jazz again. He’s up for it, though.

11. (16) Los Angeles Clippers (16-25): Believe. The Clips have won three straight and took down the Heat and Lakers since the last instalment of the power rankings. Will Blake Griffin lead them to the playoffs in his rookie season?

12. (14) Denver Nuggets (24-17): Despite the Melodrama the Nuggets are still scoring a ton and staying in the Western Conference playoff picture for now.

13. (13) Portland Trail Blazers (23-20): LaMarcus Aldridge and the few healthy Blazer starters are keeping this team afloat – but the Clippers are coming for them.

14. (10) New York Knicks (22-19): Did the hype train get carried away? Are the Knicks distracted by dreams of Carmelo Anthony? For whatever reason, they’re in a funk.

15. (12) Dallas Mavericks (27-14): Finally snapped a six-game skid with a win over the Lakers. Their cushion was big enough that they still held onto third in the West during the freefall.

16. (23) Phoenix Suns (19-21): Steve Nash is posting his best numbers in a few years and the Suns have strung a few wins together as a result. But Phoenix has to trade this guy.

17. (15) Golden State Warriors (18-23): They’ve won five of seven. Given the explosiveness of Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry, would they be a spooky team to play in the first round as a No. 8 seed?

18. (16) Houston Rockets (20-23): Horrific start to 2011 but the Rockets have righted the ship with three straight victories. The underrated Kevin Martin continues to rack up points.

19. (17) Memphis Grizzlies (19-23): Don’t look now but Zach Randolph might be playing his way onto a second straight All-Star team.

20. (21) Milwaukee Bucks (15-24): Injuries have killed the Bucks but, in the top-heavy East, there’s still plenty of time to get healthy and make the playoffs.

21. (24) Indiana Pacers (16-23)
22. (19) Charlotte Bobcats (16-24)
23. (18) Philadelphia 76ers (17-24)
24.
