The Hyundai Tournament of Champions got us warmed up and we almost struck gold with Graeme McDowell, who sizzled on Sunday and finished just out of the playoff. Let\u2019s try again at the Sony Open, the first full-field event of 2011. <\/p>\n

Accuracy and ball-striking will be important at Waialae this week, as the winds will be a-gustin\u2019, the fairways were the Tour\u2019s toughest to hit last year and the greens will be wet.<\/p>\n

Stricker is certainly hot enough, having shared the lead last week after 54 holes. He also has three top-four finishes in his last four tries at Waialae. His efficient, accurate approach and putting skills make him perfectly suited to the course.<\/p>\n

Jim Furyk <\/strong>
\nSony Open odds: +915<\/p>\n

Last year\u2019s FedEx Cup winner opened 2011 strongly with a ninth-place finish last week. Furyk won the Sony Open in 1996 and has five top-10 finishes. There\u2019s really no strike against him here unless you worry that it\u2019s only downhill after last season.<\/p>\n

THE CONTENDERS<\/h3>\n

Ernie Els <\/strong>
\nSony Open odds: +1015<\/p>\n

Els makes for a sneakier play than the top two names on this list. Not only does he offer slightly better sportsbook value, the Big Easy has won the Sony Open twice (2003, 2004) and has five top-10 finishes there. Els was 17th<\/sup> last week at the Hyundai but won his previous tournament. Is he about to cool off or about to start one of his runs?<\/p>\n

Matt Kuchar<\/strong>
\nSony Open odds: +1615<\/p>\n

Kuchar fits the bill of Waialae contender because of his superb ball striking. He was fantastic in 2010 and picked up where he left off last week, posting three of four rounds in the 60s en route to an 18-under, sixth-place finish. However, he\u2019s missed two straight cuts at the Sony Open. What if it\u2019s just not his track?<\/p>\n

SOLID PICKS<\/h3>\n

Charles Howell III<\/strong>
\nSony Open odds: +2050<\/p>\n

He\u2019s perhaps the most \u201cdue\u201d of anyone in the field this week. Howell has five top-five finishes at the Stony and is fifth all-time in money won there. He has to win one eventually, right?<\/p>\n

Robert Allenby<\/strong>
\nSony Open odds: +2550<\/p>\n

He has three top-10 finishes in his last five tries at Waialae and finished second last year. Also, Allenby stayed busy during the silly season. Does that mean he\u2019ll be in midseason form? Or will he be tired? \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Zach Johnson<\/strong>
\nSony Open odds: +3050<\/p>\n

Johnson pinpoint accuracy makes him someone to consider at the Sony. He won the event in 2009 and was 12th<\/sup> last year. However, his 23rd<\/sup>-place finish at the Hyundai last week was ho-hum and he\u2019s battling a toe injury.<\/p>\n

THE SLEEPER<\/h3>\n

Camilo Villegas<\/strong>
\nSony Open odds: +4050<\/p>\n

Villegas hasn\u2019t played the Sony Open since 2006 but he\u2019s no stranger to playing well early in seasons. Also, he may come out extra focused after a rule violation left him disqualified last week.<\/p>\n

THE PICK<\/h3>\n

Steve Stricker will be a no-brainer to some; I definitely expect nothing less than a top-10 effort from him. You can make a decent case for the on-the-cusp Howell as well. But my gut tells me it\u2019s Els\u2019 week. He has a great track record at the Sony and his victory two events ago shows he\u2019s already polished his swing early in the season.<\/p>\n
