The 17th-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Washington Huskies will meet for the second time this season in the 2010 Bridgeport Education Holiday Bowl on Thursday night.<\/p>\n

Nebraska defeated Washington 56-21 in Seattle on Sept. 18.<\/p>\n

The Cornhuskers had set its sights on a BCS Bowl but could not see their way past Oklahoma, losing 23-20 in the Big 12 championship game. It was especially heartbreaking as Nebraska led 17-0 in the second quarter but four turnovers later and a failure to score in the second half ended its bid.<\/p>\n

Now the Huskers will look to conclude the season and its status as a member of the Big 12 — before it moves to the Big Ten next year \u2013 with an 11th<\/sup> win and a second straight victory in the Holiday Bowl, after beating Arizona 33-0 last year.<\/p>\n

As for the Huskies, they finished their season on an upswing winning their last three games, including a thrilling 35-28 victory over Washington State in their season finale. They concluded the season with a 6-6 record, enough to lift them to bowl eligibility for the first time since 2002.<\/p>\n

Now Washington will be on a mission to prove it deserves to be in a bowl game by beating a team that already blew them out earlier this year. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

It will be etched in their minds how Taylor Martinez was a one-man wrecking crew as he dismantled the Washington defense, running for 137 yards and three touchdowns, including the longest TD run by a freshman in Nebraska history at 80 yards — while throwing for 150 yards and a score.<\/p>\n

However, Martinez struggled in the Big 12 title game after being sidelined during the final game of the season because of injuries to his right ankle and left foot. He was 12 of 24 for 143 yards with an interception, being sacked seven times, and fumbling three times.<\/p>\n

Likewise, Huskies QB Jake Locker has been dealing with his own injury setbacks since October, but he played well during the final two regular-season games, passing for 463 yards and three TDs in a pair of road wins.<\/p>\n

Locker will no doubt be feeling better, as the once Heisman hopeful will be playing in his first bowl game of his collegiate career. He will hope the Huskies defense can hold its own against the Huskers, giving Locker a chance to guide his team to victory.<\/p>\n

The Huskers enter Thursday\u2019s game averaging 32.7 points and are 10th in the FBS with 259.6 rushing yards per game.<\/p>\n

The rushing attack is lead by Roy Helu who has run for 1,211 yards and 11 touchdowns, while Martinez has 942 rushing yards and 12 TDs. Helu decimated the Washington D-line last time out rushing for 110 yards and two scores on just 10 carries.<\/p>\n

The Huskies will counter with its running game, handing the rock to Chris Polk who has amassed 1,238 yards and eight scores on the year.<\/p>\n

Polk will be facing a Nebraska defense that held him to 55 yards but will be missing starting tackle Baker Steinkuhler, suspended for this game after being ticketed on suspicion of drunken driving. Steinkuhler helped Nebraska allow the 10th-fewest yards in the FBS at 304.2 per game.<\/p>\n

Nebraska holds a 4-3-1 edge against Washington, taking the past three meetings.<\/p>\n

This will be an interesting matchup of two hobbled quarterbacks who will defiantly not be playing a t 100 percent.\u00a0 Both teams have sold running games so that should be a wash. Nevertheless, the Cornhuskers defense has been more consistent while the Huskies\u2019 has faded and shown its vulnerability numerous times during this year\u2019s campaign. I\u2019m going with the old adage that defense wins championships, and picking Nebraska in this one.<\/p>\n
