Few BCS bowls are as storied as the Orange Bowl \u2013 now known as the Discover Orange Bowl. It\u2019s been played annually since January 1935. It\u2019s tied with the Sugar Bowl and the Sun Bowl as the second-oldest bowl game in the country. In 1964, it became the first college bowl televised in prime time.<\/p>\n

The Orange Bowl pits the ACC champion against an at-large selection (unless the ACC champ is in the national title game). This year, ACC champ Virginia Tech will host Stanford.<\/p>\n

With 18 and 17 appearances, respectively, Oklahoma and Nebraska have by far the most appearances in the Orange Bowl. No other team has more than nine appearances. The Miami Hurricanes have represented the ACC on their home turf nine times, going 6-3.<\/p>\n

Current NFLers with Orange Bowl MVP honors to their names include Carson Palmer (2003), Matt Leinart (2005), Brian Brohm (2007) and Aqib Talib (2008). [soliloquy id=”82219″]<\/p>\n

ACC teams have struggled representing their conference in recent Orange Bowls. The at-large team has beaten the ACC team four of the last five years.<\/p>\n

RECENT RESULTS<\/strong><\/p>\n

2006: Penn State 26, Florida State 23 (3OT)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Florida State lost a triple-overtime heartbreaker to Penn State, largely because of kicking woes. Seminoles kicker Gary Cismesia missed a 44-yard attempt wide right in the first overtime and his 38-yard attempt in the third overtime bounced off the right upright. Penn State\u2019s Kevin Kelly clinched the game with a 29-yard chip shot.<\/p>\n

2007: Louisville 24, Wake Forest 13<\/strong><\/p>\n

2007 marked another choke job by the ACC. Wake Forest led 13-10 early in the fourth quarter but Brian Brohm took Louisville down the field for 81 and 71-yard scoring drives in the final frame. Anthony Allen and Brock Bolen finished the drives with touchdown runs.<\/p>\n

2008: Kansas 24, Virginia Tech 21<\/strong><\/p>\n

2008 wasn\u2019t an Orange Bowl to remember for Tyrod Taylor; he was sacked on his first two plays and threw a pick-six to Aqib Talib. Kansas\u2019 defense prevailed in this one.<\/p>\n

2009: Virginia Tech 20, Cincinnati 7<\/strong><\/p>\n

Taylor still didn\u2019t bring his A-game to his second Orange Bowl, going 13 of 22 for 140 passing yards and an interception, but the Hokies looked much more like the team we\u2019ll see in this year\u2019s Orange Bowl by this point. They totalled 258 rushing yards, including 158 for Darren Evans and 45 for Taylor. Those two should be prominently featured in the running game this year along with Ryan Williams.<\/p>\n

2010: Iowa 24, Georgia Tech 14<\/strong><\/p>\n

With a kick-off temperature of 49 degrees, last year\u2019s Orange Bowl was the coldest in Miami\u2019s history. Maybe that\u2019s what threw Georgia Tech off its game? The Yellow Jackets\u2019 usually dominant triple-option rushing attack couldn\u2019t do a thing against Iowa\u2019s defense. Josh Nesbitt totalled just 26 yards on 20 carries and completed 2 of 9 passes for 12 yards and a pick.<\/p>\n
