2010 NBA Hoops Power Ratings<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Each week during the heart of the NBA season, and once or twice during the NBA Preseason, we\u2019ll gather the troops around the roundtable and hash out the\u00a0NBA Power rankings<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

We check out the stats, looks at the records, and, most importantly, we take a close, close look at the heart of each team. We encourage you to come back each week and see how the nba Power Rankings have changed. <\/p>\n

Plenty of the usual suspects remain at or near the top of the power rankings, but look out \u2013 here come the Heat.<\/p>\n

(Last week\u2019s rankings in brackets)<\/p>\n

1. (1) San Antonio Spurs (17-3): <\/strong>You look up and down their roster and you don\u2019t see a single 25-point guy but it doesn\u2019t matter. The Big Fundamental and the rest of his teammates do just that \u2013 fundamentals \u2013 better than anyone else.<\/p>\n

2. (9) Dallas Mavericks (16-4): <\/strong>Can\u2019t say I saw the nine-game winning streak coming. Dirk Nowitzki shows no signs of slowing down in his early thirties.<\/p>\n

3. (6) Boston Celtics (16-4): <\/strong>It\u2019s starting to feel like Celtics\/Heat will become the NBA\u2019s best rivalry for the next few seasons. So far, it\u2019s 2-0 Boston.<\/p>\n

4. (4) Orlando Magic (15-5): <\/strong>The Gilbert Arenas trade rumors persist. But are the Magic sure he would help them and not be a team cancer?<\/p>\n

5. (15) New York Knicks (12-9): <\/strong>Whoa! Where did this come from? The Knicks have won nine of 10. Amare Stoudemire looks like a great fit for the Mecca.<\/p>\n

6. (7) Utah Jazz (15-6): <\/strong>As Paul Millsap slows down, Al Jefferson heats up. The Jazz\u2019s depth should keep them a contender all year.<\/p>\n

7. (8) Miami Heat (13-8): <\/strong>Hmm. Make it four wins in a row for Miami. We had to figure it was only a matter of time before the Heat got, er, hot. They deserve more credit than they\u2019ve gotten for playing solid defense. Also \u2013 is it just me or is this team rapidly becoming LeBron\u2019s, not D-Wade\u2019s?<\/p>\n

8. (13) Denver Nuggets (13-6): <\/strong>Here\u2019s another surprising win streak: seven games. I suppose we should expect the Nuggets to play competitive ball as long as Carmelo Anthony remains in town.<\/p>\n

9. (2) Los Angeles Lakers (14-6): <\/strong>They\u2019ll be back up the rankings in no time. Andrew Bynum is working out hard and possibly only a week or so from returning. That\u2019ll give L.A. a nice shot in the arm.<\/p>\n

10. (5) Oklahoma City Thunder (14-7): <\/strong>Kevin Durant still isn\u2019t 100 per cent but, boy oh boy, has Russell Westbrook done an amazing job picking up his slack or what? The Thunder have two of the NBA\u2019s top nine scorers and should be a force once Durant is fully healthy.<\/p>\n

11. (12) Atlanta Hawks (13-8): <\/strong>We have to assume the Hawks will slide in the rankings until Joe Johnson returns. This isn\u2019t a bad team but it doesn\u2019t look like Atlanta will take a step forward this year.<\/p>\n

12. (3) New Orleans Hornets (13-7): <\/strong>2-6 over their last eight games. Still think Chris Paul wants to stay in the Big Easy? Let\u2019s check back again after Christmas.<\/p>\n

13. (17) Phoenix Suns (11-9): <\/strong>We\u2019ll see them fluctuate here and their but this is an extremely low-ceiling team. You can\u2019t teach an old dog new tricks and the Suns can\u2019t play defense. No team allows more points per game than Phoenix. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

14. (10) Chicago Bulls (10-8): <\/strong>A 10-8 record in a weak division is nothing to sneeze at but I would\u2019ve expected the Bulls to be better than this. Still, they should keep improving; Derrick Rose is emerging as a serious MVP candidate and Carlos Boozer will get his legs back soon enough. He\u2019s only played three games.<\/p>\n

15. (19) Indiana Pacers (9-9): <\/strong>Roy Hibbert has stumbled over his last couple of games but he\u2019s still been one of the league\u2019s biggest surprises this year. With a big man like him supporting Danny Granger, the Pacers have a great shot to make the playoffs in\u00a0 the weak East.<\/p>\n

16. (16) Toronto Raptors (8-12): <\/strong>Weren\u2019t they supposed to be lottery pick contenders? Their improved play \u2013 6-3 in their last nine games \u2013 puts them in the playoff mix thanks to playing in the East. Their schedule will test them hard this week, however, with five games in seven nights.<\/p>\n

17. (11) Portland Trail Blazers (9-11): <\/strong>With Brandon Roy still not looking anywhere near healthy, it\u2019s starting to look like a lost season for the Blazers. It\u2019s a shame given the talent on their roster.<\/p>\n

18. (18) Milwaukee Bucks (7-12): <\/strong>I still absolutely wouldn\u2019t count the Bucks out. They still have more depth and skill than several Eastern Conference teams ahead of them in the standings. Can you really tell me the Bucks can\u2019t pass the Raptors?<\/p>\n

19. (20) Charlotte Bobcats (7-13): <\/strong>That a 7-13 team can crack the top 20 shows how bizarre the NBA has been this season. The Bobcats are one of 12 teams with a winning percentage below .400 this year.<\/p>\n

20. Golden State (8-12): <\/strong>Losers of three straight but I still think they have better relative strength than the teams below them. David Lee is looking healthier by the game and the Warriors have two major offensive threats in Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry.<\/p>\n

21. (29) Philadelphia 76ers (6-14)<\/strong>
\n22. (23) Memphis Grizzlies (8-13)<\/strong>
\n23. (28) Houston Rockets (7-13)<\/strong>
\n24. (25) Washington Wizards (6-13)<\/strong>
\n25. (22) Detroit Pistons (7-14)<\/strong>
\n26. (21) Cleveland Cavaliers (7-13)<\/strong>
\n27. (26) Minnesota Timberwolves (5-15)<\/strong>
\n28. (27) New Jersey Nets (6-15)<\/strong>
\n29. (30) Los Angeles Clippers (4-17)<\/strong>
\n30. (24) Sacramento Kings (4-14)<\/strong><\/p>\n
