Atlanta Hawks (12-7 through Thursday, December 2)<\/strong><\/p>\n

After a piping hot start to 2010-11 followed by a serious skid, the Hawks are hot again. Entering Friday\u2019s game against Philadelphia, they\u2019d won four straight contests and beaten the spread in three of those victories.<\/p>\n

The Hawks have enjoyed very balanced play; they\u2019re 11th<\/sup> in the NBA in total offense and 11th<\/sup> in total defense. They\u2019re the NBA\u2019s second-best shooting team at 47.9 per cent from the field for the season. But are they in serious trouble entering Miami on Saturday night?<\/p>\n

A few factors suggest so. First off, the Hawks\u2019 schedule may have them feeling complacent going into the Miami game. Including Friday\u2019s game, their last six opponents are New Jersey, Washington, New York, Toronto, Memphis and Philadelphia. The competition doesn\u2019t get much softer than that. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Worse yet for the Hawks, leading scorer Joe Johnson is out until at least mid January with an elbow injury. They won their first game about him but just barely, scraping by Memphis 112-109 in overtime and failing to cover the spread.<\/p>\n

Miami Heat (12-8)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Is it possible that the Cleveland Cavaliers, of all teams, woke the sleeping giant? It hardly seems like a coincidence that LeBron James went off for his best game with the Heat against his old team on Thursday night, tallying 38 points, including 24 in one quarter.<\/p>\n

LeBron, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh haven\u2019t totally learned to coexist yet \u2013 they seem to take turns having big games \u2013 but the Heat are finally stringing wins together. They\u2019ve won three straight games, including their last two by an average of 27.5 points.<\/p>\n

The pick:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Heat haven\u2019t had the toughest schedule of late either but I think the Hawks are ripe for the picking. On the road, minus their best player and facing a hot team, the Hawks could easily lose by more than the eight-point spread. It\u2019s worth noting that the Heat have played underrated defense this season, ranking fifth in the league.<\/p>\n
