The Gamecocks represent the SEC East division in this weekend\u2019s championship. The East had an especially pronounced year of every team beating up on one another \u2013 out emerged a three-loss SC team. Still, one shouldn\u2019t take away from what has been an excellent season for head coach Steve Spurrier and Co.<\/p>\n

Carolina\u2019s effectiveness stems from the dynamic offensive duo of WR Alshon Jeffery and super freshman RB Marcus Lattimore; the rest of the equation is comprised of all other units on the team doing enough to get by. The defense is good \u2013 it just scrapes the Top 25 (25th<\/sup>, actually) in the nation in points allowed \u2013 but without the balance of Lattimore\u2019s running and the routine mis-matches Jeffery presents, the Gamecocks aren\u2019t the same team. Between them, the duo is responsible for 25 TDs and it is their presence that makes life easier for veteran QB Stephen Garcia, who has been a whipping boy in Columbia more than every once in a while.<\/p>\n

To knock off the unbeaten Tigers, SC\u2019s defense must play its usual strong style and Garcia must stay upright and play a smart game. In Auburn\u2019s Iron Bowl game versus Alabama last week, \u2019Bama pivot Greg McElroy played great in the first half, but Auburn eventually got to him and knocked him out of the game en route to an Auburn comeback. If the keys wind up being entrusted to freshman QB Connor Shaw should Garcia suffer an injury \u2013 he\u2019s already banged up with shoulder and finger ailments from the Clemson game last week \u2013 the \u2019Cocks are in deep trouble. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Auburn<\/strong><\/p>\n

Conveniently right before the SEC Championship game, the saga of \u201cis Cam Newton eligible or isn\u2019t he?\u201d seems to have solved itself in the positive. There are enough people grumbling about the NCAA\u2019s handling of the potential Newton malfeasance, but the show must go on \u2013 and it is Newton that makes the game a marquee show.<\/p>\n

Auburn\u2019s superstar QB almost certainly locked up the Heisman Trophy last week with a gutsy performance against hated Alabama in a shocking come-from-behind victory. Newton is without a doubt the single most valuable player to a team in the nation; there is no way Auburn would even be a double-digit win team without him. His presence means that Auburn is the favorite in this game and there\u2019s no reason to believe that, even with the off-field distractions, he won\u2019t work some more magic.<\/p>\n

Auburn\u2019s defense has proved itself vulnerable over the course of the season and several teams \u2013 South Carolina included in an earlier 35-27 Auburn win \u2013 have been able to match the Tigers nearly score for score. This means that in order for the unbeaten dominance to continue, Newton must be on his game. It almost sounds silly talking so exclusively about one player in a team game like football (one mustn\u2019t forget, for instance, the effectiveness of Auburn\u2019s O-line clearing lanes for Newton and RB Michael Dyer) but the Heisman-caliber pivot really is the prime example of a kid putting a team entirely on his shoulders and carrying them to greatness.<\/p>\n

The Pick: <\/strong>Jeffery should terrorize the Auburn secondary much the same as Alabama WR Julio Jones did last week and Auburn\u2019s D should yield somewhat to the onslaught of Lattimore. But betting against Newton this season just hasn\u2019t been good business. This will be a close game \u2013 SC might even get out in front \u2013 but after the Iron Bowl comeback last week it feels like Auburn knows they\u2019re going to win every game. I like Auburn to keep the unblemished record intact.<\/p>\n
