MLB news: Miguel Tejada signs with Giants; Dodgers sign Uribe, trade Theriot<\/strong><\/p>\nThe World Series champion San Francisco Giants lost infielders Edgar Renteria and Juan Uribe, both crucial contributors during their playoff run, to free agency this offseason and have moved quickly to replace their production. They signed Miguel Tejada to a one-year, $6.5-million deal yesterday. Tejada, the 2002 American League MVP, hit .269 with 15 homers and 71 RBI last season.<\/p>\n
One of San Fran\u2019s top rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers, retooled this week. They finalized a three-year, $21-million deal with Uribe. The deal rendered Ryan Theriot expendable, so the Dodgers shipped the scrappy shortstop\/second baseman to the St. Louis Cardinals for reliever Blake Hawksworth. <\/p>\n

Colorado acquired enigmatic, underused forward Tomas Fleischmann from Washington in exchange for gritty defender Scott Hannan.<\/p>\n
Fleischmann has struggled this season, netting just 10 points in 23 games, but he had 23 goals and 51 points in 69 games last year and is only 26 years old. Hannan gives the Caps some desperately needed physicality on the back end.<\/p>\n
Marian Hossa just can\u2019t shake off the injury bug. He was hurt in a collision with big Nick Boynton during practice on Monday and had to be helped off the ice. He\u2019s out two to three weeks with an upper-body injury.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s low, and then there\u2019s what happened at Pat Burns\u2019 funeral yesterday. Some time between midnight and Tuesday morning the night after the legendary coach\u2019s service, someone ransacked his widow\u2019s car. Line Burns had left lots of memorabilia, including autographed sweaters, in the car along with family photos, clothes, jewelry and an iPad, all of which were stolen. Disgusting.<\/p>\n
NCAA football news: Alabama fires P.A. operator for taunting Cameron Newton<\/strong><\/p>\nYes, even P.A. song selection can go too far. When Auburn visited Alabama for the Iron Bowl last week, a stadium employee selected songs to taunt quarterback Cameron Newton. \u201cTake the Money and Run\u201d and \u201cSon of a Preacher Man\u201d played on the P.A .while Newton warmed up; the songs were used in reference to the NCAA probe regarding Newton\u2019s father, a pastor, soliciting $180,000 during recruiting last year. Alabama has since fired the employee, who did not clear the songs with a senior athletic administrator.<\/p>\n
