The old saying \u201csave the best for last\u201d is absolutely applicable to Auburn’s 2010 campaign. The Tigers must play the hated in-state rival Crimson Tide on the road for the Iron Bowl and a chance at a perfect record. There couldn’t be more on the line for Heisman front-runner Cam Newton and Co.<\/p>\n

If there needed to be any pressure, Auburn faces an Alabama team this Friday that is among the nation’s elite in virtually all notable statistics. Ranking 20th<\/sup> in the nation in points for and 3rd<\/sup> in the nation in points against (an incredibly stout 12.8 per game) Auburn clashes with a prodigiously talented team in Tuscaloosa.<\/p>\n

Yet, starting pivot Newton has carried this Auburn team throughout the season and it is entirely conceivable that it happens once more. The entire offense funnels through Newton and though he’s had the bother of evading knocks on his character more than a rival SEC pass rush, he’s guided the Tigers to a flawless season. To knock off ‘Bama in hostile territory, Newton will need tertiary support from RB Michael Dyer and an on-again, off-again 2010 defensive unit. Defensive tackle Nick Fairley is something special, but other than that Auburn’s \u201cD\u201d hasn’t been as vaunted as it generally is.<\/p>\n

In the past couple years it has been Alabama that has hogged all the state’s football glory, but Auburn wants to ensure that 2010 is its time in the sun. All could be derailed, however, if the Tigers can’t get the job done in Bryant-Denny. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Alabama<\/strong><\/p>\n

This season has already been a mite disappointing for the Tide, but much could be remedied if they can knock off unbeaten Auburn in a rivalry game unmatched save perhaps Michigan-Ohio State. Tide head coach Nick Saban will doubtlessly have his troops bouncing off the walls for this match-up, and what excitement the players alone can’t muster, the rabid ‘Bama fans will fill the void.<\/p>\n

Savvy veteran QB Greg McElroy needs a further spike in his moxie for this crucial test. The running game has been leading the way lately under last year’s Heisman winner Mark Ingram and super soph Trent Richardson, but how McElroy delivers the ball to star receiver Julio Jones and supplementary targets like Marquis Maze will make the difference in this game. The Tide defense has represented a far more effective unit this season than Auburn’s so there should be as profound a test as they can throw at superstar Cam Newton. But without Alabama’s attack moving and scoring the ball with gusto, the buzz-kill could perpetuate in Bear Bryant Land.<\/p>\n

Alabama handled ranked Mississippi State a couple weeks ago, and it crushed Georgia State for a confidence boost last week. All the vibes bend toward Alabama knocking off the unbeaten visitor this Friday, but as well know: games are not played on paper.<\/p>\n

The Pick: <\/strong>Newton will quite likely flip open yet another bag of tricks this Friday, but expect Alabama’s efforts to be so spirited \u2013 the Tide have already proven they are as or more talented than any team in the country \u2013 that enough big plays are made to ruin the Tigers’ unblemished record.<\/p>\n
