UAB<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Blazers have had an interesting season complete with a couple surprising upsets against Troy and Southern Mississippi.\u00a0 Unfortunately, unexpected home losses to Marshall and Florida International have prevented them from extending their season beyond this final regular season game against Rice with a bowl.\u00a0 Still there is definite promise for next year.<\/p>\n

The great reason for optimism is the development of QB Bryan Ellis.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t play in the opener and barely played in their loss to Florida International but since then he has received the bulk of the action and has performed exceptionally.\u00a0 4 three hundred yard games and only a single game under 200 yards while throwing for 22 TDs.\u00a0 He has another season of eligibility so UAB might be a team to reckon with the C-USA East next season.<\/p>\n

These teams have met only three times as they reside in separate divisions in C-USA.\u00a0 Each time the home team has won with UAB winning last year by 20 points for an easy cover.\u00a0 UAB has been favoured in each one of these contests and the team that has won the game has covered each time.\u00a0 With the short spread here I think that trend should continue this year. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Rice<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Owls, even with only three victories, are probably enjoying a better season than expected.\u00a0 Last week they upset East Carolina scoring a whopping 62 points.\u00a0 Now ECU\u2019s defense may not exactly be top shelf but the explosion we saw last week was completely unexpected.\u00a0 Hopefully they bottled a little bit of what they were feeling last week for this week\u2019s contest against UAB.<\/p>\n

The Blazers are not very strong on defense either so a repeat of the offensive outburst from last week is not totally out of the question.\u00a0 The key to last week\u2019s outburst was being able to run the ball effectively as two running backs eclipsed the 100 yard mark.\u00a0 That made it easy for QB Taylor McHargue who only had to put the ball in the air 15 times, completing 11 with three TDs.\u00a0 When the Owls are forced to pass they don\u2019t have enough playmakers to do damage but when they can choose their spots they can have success.<\/p>\n

Neither of these teams will be playing for the conference championship or in a bowl game so it can be difficult to forecast what we will get as they play out the string.\u00a0 Rice is at home and this game is winnable for them if they continue the effort we saw last week.\u00a0 UAB is building for next year and it looks like they will put forth a good effort as well.\u00a0 Even though it is meaningless this one should be good competition.<\/p>\n

The Pick: <\/strong>I like UAB a little more than Rice this season.\u00a0 Since they gave up on trying to recreate Joe Webb they have had success.\u00a0 Take the Blazers as the short favourite.<\/p>\n
