East Carolina<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Pirates may only be 6-4 on the season but their 5-1 record in Conference USA has them tied with Central Florida for the lead in the East Division. \u00a0Unfortunately they lost to the Knights earlier in the season so if they want to advance to the conference championship game they are going to have to win out and hope that UCF stumbles. \u00a0This week against Rice should be a gimme for an ECU team that has been a pleasant surprise this season.<\/p>\n

There is probably no team that has made a smoother transition to the spread offense than the Pirates have this season. \u00a0It is especially impressive given that they were breaking in a new coach and signal caller, the latter of which had little experience as an NCAA QB. \u00a0Dominique Davis has been fantastic leading the fifth ranked passing attack in the country and an offense averaging 38ppg, good for 12th in the nation. \u00a0 In a conference known for offense ECU can now compete with the best of them.<\/p>\n

These teams have met only three times as conference mates and each time the home team was the victor. \u00a0East Carolina has been the favourite in everyone of these games with last year\u2019s spread of 18.5 points being the largest in the series. \u00a0Every time ECU has beaten the Owls they have covered the spread and they should feel confident facing a team that is in a noticeable down cycle.<\/p>\n

Rice<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Owls may have two wins on the season but they are only a total of 5 points from being winless. \u00a0They are about where most expected they would be at the bottom of their division in C-USA and are unlikely to win another game this season. \u00a0They still have a chance to play spoiler though so it will be interesting to see how they respond at home on Saturday. \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Rice\u2019s biggest problems are on the defensive side of the ball. \u00a0They are second worst in the nation against the pass which doesn\u2019t bode well facing ECU\u2019s pass happy attack. \u00a0Last week they gave up more than 350 yards through the air to a Tulane team averaging less than 240 passing yards per game. \u00a0One can only imagine how ugly it might get on Saturday with the Pirates bombing away.<\/p>\n

The Owls best shot is to pound the ball using former Wolverine Sam McGuffie against the Pirates – \u00a0with the intent of keeping their offense off the field. \u00a0He averages over 4 yards per carry but usually doesn\u2019t tote the rock more than 16 times again. \u00a0A couple of weeks ago he broke loose for 178 yards against Tulsa which is the kind of performance they need to stand a chance against East Carolina.<\/p>\n

The Pick:\u00a0I think ECU will jump all over the Owls and never look back. \u00a0I have a lot of confidence in a double digit victory with points to spare.<\/p>\n
